I never expected buying my own home to end in a courtroom. What happened that day changed my family forever.

My attorney, Daniel Ross, leaned closer. “They can’t win based on feelings.”

“I know,” I whispered.

But feelings were not all they brought.

Dad’s lawyer presented a document titled Family Property Agreement.

My stomach tightened.

There was my name.

There was Amber’s name.

There was a clause stating I had agreed to purchase the property only as a temporary owner until Amber’s credit became stronger.

At the bottom sat my signature.

Except I had never signed it.

Amber finally looked at me, dropping the helpless performance for just a single moment.

She smiled.

The judge turned toward me. “Ms. Lane, is this your signature?”

Everyone in the courtroom waited.

My parents expected me to pan!c.

Instead, I opened my folder and returned the smile.

“No, Your Honor,” I answered. “And I can prove exactly who forged it.”

Amber’s smile disappeared.

Dad spun around so quickly his shoes scraped across the floor. “What did you just say?”

My attorney stood. “Your Honor, we ask the court to admit our forensic handwriting analysis along with the bank records.”

Mom quietly whispered, “Forensic?”

I never looked at her.

I looked directly at Amber.

For the first time, she could not hide behind tears fast enough.

Daniel placed the report onto the table. “The signature on the alleged agreement does not match my client’s verified signatures. However, it closely matches samples taken from Amber Lane’s mortgage preapproval application.”

Amber’s husband turned pale.

The judge’s expression grew sharper. “Are you alleging fraud?”

“Yes,” Daniel replied. “And attempted theft of property.”

Dad burst out, “This is simply a family misunderstanding.”

The judge brought down her gavel once. “Sit down.”

He obeyed.

Then Daniel opened the second folder.

“Three days after my client’s offer was accepted, Amber Lane sent an email to the seller’s agent from a fake address claiming my client wanted her added to the deed. When that attempt failed, this agreement suddenly appeared.”
