The front door opened, and several sheriff’s deputies entered, followed by paramedics, my attorney Daniel Price, and a woman carrying an official folder.
Marcus raised his hands.
“This is only a family disagreement.”
Rachel pointed at me.
“She started it!”
Daniel looked toward the camera above the pantry.
“The recording has already been secured.”
The woman introduced herself as Special Agent Lena Ortiz from the Financial Crimes Division.
She informed Marcus and Rachel that they were being investigated for attempted exploitation of an older adult, document forgery, coercion, conspiracy, and attempted bank fraud.
Rachel stared at her.
“Investigated? Over what money?”
Daniel carefully picked up the torn pieces of his letter.
“The farm proceeds were never placed into an ordinary personal account,” he explained. “Three days before the sale was completed, Mrs. Hale transferred them into an irrevocable charitable trust.”
Marcus looked at me in disbelief.
I managed a small smile.
“You were never trying to take my personal money,” I said. “You were trying to take funds belonging to the state’s largest agricultural scholarship program.”
This time, nobody laughed.
Part 3: The Future They Lost
Rachel was the first to lose her confidence.
“The bank statement has her name on it!”
“It is a custodial account,” Daniel explained. “Your mother manages the trust, but she does not personally own the principal. She could not hand you the three million dollars even if she wanted to.”
Marcus glared at me.
“You planned this.”
“I protected myself.”
Agent Ortiz opened her folder. Investigators had recovered messages in which Marcus and Rachel discussed false documents, pressured signatures, and plans to move the money through three shell companies.
Rachel turned toward her brother.
“You said those messages were protected.”
“They were supposed to be,” he muttered.
Daniel nearly smiled.
“You sent them while connected to your mother’s guest Wi-Fi. The router records were preserved as part of the security archive.”
Marcus suddenly moved toward the table, but two deputies stopped him.
He shouted that I was destroying his life. Rachel began crying about her children, bills, and plans for the future.
Neither of them asked whether I was all right.
As the paramedics helped me outside, Marcus called after me.
