The house was still when I stood at the foot of our bed, folding a pile of Leo’s tiny T-shirts. On the dresser, my mother’s silk scarf lay coiled like a sleeping cat, still faintly holding the scent of her jasmine perfume three months after we buried her.
I lifted it to my face and breathed in, quick, before I could stop myself.
“Mommy, are you crying again?”
Leo stood in the doorway in mismatched socks, one blue, one striped, holding a juice box like a trophy.
“No, baby. Just smelling Grandma.”
“Grandma smells like flowers.”
“She does.”
He padded in and climbed onto the bed, and I noticed it again. A smudge of silver paint on the side of his thumb, dried and flaking, and another streak crusted along his elbow that I could have sworn wasn’t there when I’d bathed him last night.
“Leo, what is this?”
“Paint.”
“I can see it’s paint. From where?”
“Art class,” Mark called from the hallway, appearing behind him with a coffee in one hand and his phone in the other. “The teacher’s been doing a whole galaxy unit this week. Stars, planets, the works.”
He gave me that smile. Small, private, the corners of his mouth tucked in as if he was holding something he did not want to spill.
“It looks stubborn. Doesn’t it wash off?”
“You know how he is in the tub. Splashes everywhere except on himself.”
“I did!” Leo shouted, then bounced off the bed and ran for the stairs.
Mark leaned in and kissed my forehead, quick, warm.
“You look tired, Ket.”
“I’m fine.”
“Our anniversary is in three days. Ten years. Are we doing something or are you going to keep pretending you forgot?”
“I haven’t forgotten.”
“Good.”
He glanced at his phone again, that same soft smile, and slipped it into his back pocket before I could see the screen.
“I have to run out for an hour,” he said. “Errand.”
“On a Wednesday morning? Don’t you have work?”
“Boring one. Promise.”
I watched him go and told myself I was being ridiculous.
Grief did strange things to a person. My mother used to say suspicion was just love with nowhere to land, and lately my love had nowhere at all.
That evening, I went to put away a stack of towels in the guest room, but the door wouldn’t open.
“Mark?” I called. “Why is the guest room locked?”
“Is it?” he called back from downstairs. “Must’ve stuck. I’ll take a look in a minute.”
“Do you have the key?”
“Somewhere,” he said. “Don’t worry about it.”
I stood there with my hand on the knob for a long moment. Then I walked away, because that was what a reasonable wife did. That was what a woman who trusted her husband did.
By the next afternoon, I had almost convinced myself.
“Milk, apples, bread, and something for dinner,” I told Leo as I buckled him into the cart at the grocery store. “Help Mommy remember.”
“Milk, apples, bread,” he sang, swinging his legs.
“Good boy.”
The store hummed with its ordinary afternoon sounds. Squeaking wheels, a baby fussing two aisles over, the tinny pop song leaking from the speakers overhead.
I picked out a carton of milk, tucked it into the shopping cart, and joined the checkout line.
For the first time in weeks, I felt something loosen in my chest. Almost like calm. Almost like normal.
Leo sat in the shopping cart seat, swinging his legs and humming to himself while I glanced at my watch, wondering what to cook for our anniversary.
Then, out of nowhere, he went completely still.
He tugged hard on my sleeve.
“Mommy. Mommy, look.”
The cashier’s scanner beeped somewhere behind me, but the sound felt far away, like it belonged to another woman’s afternoon.
Leo was still pulling at my sleeve, pointing toward the bakery display.
“I see her, sweetheart,” I whispered. “Keep your voice down.”
“But that’s her,” he said, his tiny finger still pointing. “That’s the lady who comes to our house when you’re at work! She plays in the room upstairs.”
My hand closed around the milk carton so tight I felt the cardboard buckle.
I set it down on the belt before I crushed it entirely.
The woman by the bakery had not turned yet.
She was young. Maybe 30.
She was wearing a short green dress, with her dark hair pulled up loose, and a canvas tote slung over one shoulder.
I could not see her face. I did not know if I wanted to.
“Leo, honey,” I said, kneeling a little so my eyes were closer to his. “What do you mean, plays?”
“Games,” he said, matter-of-fact, swinging his legs. “But Daddy said it’s a secret. So I’m not telling.”
“You just told me.”
His mouth opened. Then closed. His eyes went wide with the specific panic of a five-year-old realizing he has broken a rule.
“I didn’t mean to,” he whispered.
Ten years. Ten years of Sunday mornings and burnt pancakes and Mark rubbing my back when I could not sleep after the funeral.
Ten years, and my son was telling me a woman came to my house while I worked.
The cashier said something.
I did not hear it.
“Ma’am? Ma’am, your total. Forty-two eighteen.”
I fumbled my card. Dropped it. Picked it up. Tapped it against the reader with a hand that would not stop shaking.

“Mommy, are you mad?”
“No, baby.”
“You look mad.”

The paint on Leo’s fingers last week. Mark laughing it off. The guest room door locked on Thursday. That small private smile at his phone on Saturday morning while I poured coffee.
My mother had been gone three months.
Three months, and I had been telling myself the imbalance in the house was just grief. Just me. Just the empty chair at holidays and the perfume on a scarf that would not fade.
I looked at the back of that woman again.
She was picking up a loaf of sourdough, turning it in her hands like she was reading the label.
“Leo,” I said quietly. “How many times has the lady come over?”
He counted on his fingers, lost track, started again.
“A lot. But only when you’re at work. And she brings the tall bag.”
“What tall bag?”
“With the sticks in it.”
Sticks. Brushes, maybe. Or something else. My mind would not settle on anything reasonable.
I pushed the cart toward the exit, then stopped.
My feet just stopped.
I could walk out.
I could load Leo into the car, drive home, and pretend I had never heard any of this.
I could confront Mark tonight in our kitchen where the light was soft, and I had my footing.
Or I could turn around right now, ten feet from a stranger who might already know more about my marriage than I did, and I could ask her myself.
“Mommy?”
“One second, sweetheart.”
I closed my eyes.
I thought of my mother, of the way she used to say a thing worth knowing is worth knowing today.
I turned the cart around.
My legs felt like they belonged to someone else as I walked toward the bakery display. Leo went quiet, sensing the shift in me the way small animals sense storms.
Ten feet. Six feet. Three.
“Excuse me,” I said. My voice came out thinner than I wanted.
The woman did not turn.
“Excuse me,” I said again.
She glanced up, distracted, still holding the bread.
Her eyes moved past me, landed on Leo, and something flickered there. Recognition. A soft, startled kind of recognition, the way you look at a child you have seen in a photograph.
Then her eyes came back to me, and she understood who I had to be.
“Oh,” she said quietly.
“Do you know my son?”
She set the bread down slowly, as though she were buying herself a few extra seconds.
“I…” She wet her lips. “I think you should call your husband.”
“I’m asking you.”
She didn’t answer.
The sound of his name in her mouth had already broken something in my chest.
I could feel Leo watching me, feel the whole fluorescent supermarket humming around us, and I could not make a single word come out.
She saw it.
Whatever she saw on my face, she saw it, and her expression softened into something that was almost tender, almost sorry.
She smiled at me. A small, warm, unreadable smile.

“Who are you?” I asked.

“Who. Are. You.” I took another step forward, close enough that Leo’s swinging feet bumped my hip. “My son says you come to my house when I’m at work. So who are you?”

“My name is Nora,” she said quietly. “I’ve been doing some work for Mark. It’s private, and he asked me not to say anything. I gave him my word.”
Private.
The word slid under my ribs like a thin blade.
Leo had gone very still in the cart, watching me with those wide eyes he got when grown-ups used the wrong tone.
“Mommy?”
“It’s okay, baby.”
It was not okay.
I stared at Nora for a long second, memorizing her face, the paint on her thumbnail, the loose braid over her shoulder.
Then I turned the shopping cart around and hurried out of the store.
“Mommy?” Leo asked.
I didn’t answer. I just kept pushing the cart toward the parking lot.
I buckled Leo into his car seat with fingers that would not stop trembling.
In the driver’s seat, I pulled out my phone and called Mark.
It went straight to voicemail.
I called again. Voicemail. A third time. The polite recorded voice told me to leave a message, and I could not think of a single word that would fit.
“Where is Daddy?” Leo asked from the back seat.
“I don’t know, sweetheart.”
“Is Daddy in trouble?”
I looked at him in the rearview mirror.
“Why would Daddy be in trouble?”
He hesitated. Chewed the inside of his cheek the way Mark did.
“I wasn’t supposed to tell about the lady.”
“I know, baby.”
“Daddy said it’s a surprise. He said if I told, the surprise would be broken.”
The drive home was seven minutes, and it felt like an hour.
I kept picturing the guest bedroom.
At home, I left the groceries we did not have in the car and carried Leo inside on my hip.
“Stay down here,” I told him, setting him on the couch with the television. “Mommy needs to check something.”
I took the stairs two at a time.
The guest room door was locked.
I rattled the handle.
Twisted it hard.
Pressed my forehead against the wood and tried to breathe.
“Mark,” I whispered, to nobody. “What did you do?”
Footsteps behind me. Small ones. Leo had followed anyway, one hand curled around the banister.
“Mommy,” he said, in that too-loud whisper five-year-olds thought was quiet. “I’m not supposed to say.”
“Leo, honey, please go back downstairs.”
“But there’s a surprise inside.” He climbed the last two steps. “Daddy has the key. He keeps it in his work bag. He said only him and the lady can open it ’cause the surprise isn’t done.”
I closed my eyes.
Every clue lined up in a row and made a picture I had already finished drawing. A locked door. A key kept away from me. A woman who came when I was gone. A son who had been coached. And a husband who was not answering his phone.
I sank onto the top step. Leo sat next to me and leaned his warm little head against my arm.
“Are you mad, Mommy?”
“I’m not mad at you.”
“Are you mad at Daddy?”
I did not answer.
I went back downstairs and sat on the bottom step, rehearsing sentences I had never wanted to say.

Twenty minutes later, I spotted Nora in the market parking lot, folding a paint-stained cloth into the trunk of a small blue car.
My legs felt borrowed as I walked toward her.
“I’m so sorry,” I said before she could turn fully. “I said terrible things. I thought.”
Nora smiled, soft and unhurried.
“Mark found me four months ago,” she said. “He brought me a shoebox of your mother’s photographs. He asked if I could put her on a wall so you’d see her every night.”
My eyes filled. Leo pressed against my leg, quiet.
“The stars,” Nora said, crouching to Leo’s level. She pulled a slim brush from her apron and placed it in his palm. “Your daddy told this little man that Grandma loved stars. He’s been sneaking upstairs to help me paint them.”
Leo held the brush like a small, holy thing.
“I wasn’t supposed to tell,” he whispered.
“You didn’t tell the important part,” Nora said. “You saved that for tonight.”
I drove home with my hands shaking on the wheel. Mark was waiting on the porch, his face pale.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I should have…”
“Take me upstairs,” I said.
He unlocked the bedroom door.
My mother looked back at me from the wall, her eyes the way I remembered them at the kitchen window, and above her a ceiling of half-finished silver stars.
I sat down on the floor and cried the way I hadn’t let myself cry in three months.
Mark knelt beside me.
“I didn’t know how to reach you,” he said. “You went so quiet.”
“I know,” I whispered. “I went quiet from myself too.”
Leo climbed onto the bed and dipped his brush into the small jar of silver paint.
“Mommy,” he said. “Come finish the last one with me.”
