“Anna,” she said gently, “I need you to answer one question without thinking about what your husband wants you to say.”

“Do you feel safe leaving here with him?”

For years Aaron had explained every restriction as medical necessity. He chose my meals because pregnancy required discipline. He took my keys because dizziness made driving unsafe. He monitored my phone because stress could harm the baby. Every decision sounded reasonable until I stopped questioning whether any of them were really mine.
