Victor emptied the accounts completely and threatened to frame the whole family if anyone spoke up. When Gerald discovered the entire scheme, Aaron’s wife was pregnant and suffering from a delicate heart condition. Fearing she might lose the baby from the shock, Gerald took the total blame, sold a piece of land to pay off desperate families, and claimed he authorized every transaction himself.
“So you knew all along that Aaron was the guilty one?” I asked in total shock.
My father in law remained completely silent, choosing not to offer any defense for his actions.
Aaron placed the hard drive on the wooden table and explained that it contained emails, audio recordings, and banking trails linking Victor to the fraud. He mentioned that he planned to turn over the evidence and run away immediately because someone had recently photographed his young child outside of school.
“You are not going to run away ever again,” Gerald ordered his son firmly. “You are going to walk into the station and tell the absolute truth.”
“You simply do not understand how dangerous these people are to my family!” Aaron argued frantically.
“I gave away five years of my life to shield you,” Gerald replied with deep sorrow. “All I managed to teach you was that someone else will always step up to pay for your mistakes.”
The heated argument placed too much stress on my father in law, causing him to clutch his chest and collapse over the table. We rushed him to a medical clinic, where the attending physician ruled out a heart attack but warned us that his blood pressure was dangerously high.
While Gerald was lying under close observation, Aaron suddenly disappeared from the waiting hallway. I initially assumed he had fled, but Daniel soon received a phone call confirming that Aaron had surrendered himself to the prosecutor along with all the evidence.
The following morning, Daniel explained that the newly submitted files would allow them to request a formal case review, though it would not automatically erase Gerald’s previous false statements. While examining nine specific receipts, I noticed Kenneth’s authentic signature written clearly before any dates or amounts had been filled in.
“Kenneth knew those blank formats were being used around the office,” I said with realization.
Gerald lowered his gaze to the floor, unable to deny the truth any longer.
I realized then that my father in law had not been shielding just one child, but had gone to prison to save both of his sons.
I told Gerald everything about how Kenneth hid his letter, how Giselle wanted to lock him in the basement, and how nobody planned to welcome him home. His pale face lost whatever tiny bit of color it had remaining.
“Perhaps I am nothing more than an embarrassment to my own children,” Gerald murmured quietly.
“You are looking for excuses for them again,” I told him plainly. “Who is ever going to look for an excuse for you?”
My father in law stayed quiet for a long moment before picking up his bag and standing up with renewed determination.
“Take me back home,” Gerald said firmly. “This time I am not going to protect anyone from the absolute truth.”
Before we could reach the house, a sudden phone call directed us toward the one person who could prove who manufactured the fake documents.
PART 3
The urgent call reached us while we were driving along the highway back toward Mississippi. It was corporate assistant Brenda, who agreed to meet us near a local market on the strict condition that Gerald waited far away.
I spotted her hiding near a fruit stall, wrapped tightly in a thick gray sweater as she nervously scanned the crowded street.
“I knew those financial receipts were being altered behind closed doors,” Brenda confessed in a hushed voice. “Several were falsified while Gerald was hospitalized with severe pneumonia, and when I tried to report it, Victor sent me a photograph of my young child with a warning message.”
Brenda handed over a hidden notebook along with a flash drive containing complete system backups directly to Daniel. The files clearly showed that several transfers occurred before Gerald ever signed anything, proving that Kenneth uploaded signed blank forms after the money was already gone.
My husband had not created the fraudulent scheme himself, but he signed blank forms and chose to remain silent after discovering how his brother used them. Gerald took the entire fall to prevent both of his sons from going to prison together. While one son fled the state, the other built a business and allowed the whole town to call their protective father a common thief.
We finally reached the family home at dusk, finding the building fully lit. My two children ran outside with joy, as Laura placed a new hat on her grandfather’s head while Lucas wrapped his arms tightly around his waist.
Kenneth stood quietly in the front hallway, holding a bag of medication he had failed to give me when I left.
“You came back home, Dad,” Kenneth said in a hesitant voice.
Gerald looked directly at his son without smiling and replied, “Yes, I returned to my own home.”
Giselle began crying and tried to hug him, but he simply walked past her to light a candle near his late wife’s portrait before opening his old bedroom door. The room was packed tight with storage boxes, sewing machines, and wedding decorations.
