Over the next three days, Teresa called more than twenty times. She demanded a formal apology, the gold chain back, and her $300 payment for December. She left endless voicemails accusing Clara of destroying a family and threatening to tell everyone what kind of woman Daniel had brought into his home.
Clara ignored every call. Daniel listened to every voicemail with a tense, pale face. Yet he kept searching for a middle ground that would appease both women—as if emotional abuse were just a simple misunderstanding.
“I don’t need you to be a referee, Daniel,” Clara told him firmly. “I need you to decide whether you think this treatment is right.”
On Sunday afternoon, Teresa showed up at their apartment unannounced.
“You do not get to set conditions in my family,” Teresa declared, stepping into the living room. “I am your husband’s mother.”
“These aren’t conditions, Teresa. They are boundaries.”
“A good daughter-in-law helps, obeys, and shows gratitude.”
“I did every single one of those things,” Clara replied. “And you responded with pure contempt.”
Teresa slammed her hand on the dining table.
“You took advantage of my son!”
Clara placed the notebook open in front of her.
“Here is every dollar you demanded from me and every hour I worked for free. If anyone took advantage of anyone, the math speaks for itself.”
Teresa scanned the total figure.
“I never forced you!”
“Yes, you did. And Daniel helped you do it.”
Daniel stepped out from the hallway, having overheard everything.
Teresa pointed a manicured finger at Clara.
“Daniel, tell your wife to hand over my necklace and apologize to me right now!”
Before Daniel could open his mouth, Teresa’s phone rang. It was Victor, her eldest son. She answered on speakerphone, completely confident her eldest would back her up.
“Mom,” Victor’s voice echoed through the room. “I just spoke with Clara. Are you going to start charging my wife a monthly fee for being married to me, too?”
Teresa’s face drained of all color.
“Because if that’s your new rule,” Victor continued coldly, “maybe all of us need to sit down and review what you’ve been doing for years.”
Daniel stared at his mother.
Clara realized then that the monthly fee and the gold chain were only the tip of the iceberg.
There was a much darker secret behind Teresa’s need for control, and it was finally about to come to light.
PART 3
Teresa hurriedly slapped her thumb against the screen to turn off the speakerphone.
“Victor, don’t you start with this nonsense—”
“It’s not nonsense, Mom,” Victor interrupted sharply, his voice still audible from the receiver. “I’ve already talked to Sarah and Daniel. This ends today.”
Clara watched as her mother-in-law’s unshakable confidence crumbled in real time. Teresa always managed to twist any complaint into a personal attack against herself, but now she looked completely cornered.
“What ends today?” Daniel asked, stepping closer.
“Nothing,” Teresa insisted nervously. “Your brother is overreacting.”
“No, he isn’t,” Clara said. “You told me you were charging me because you raised Daniel. Victor just implied this didn’t start with me.”
Teresa turned toward the front door, but Daniel stepped into her path.
“Mom, sit down.”
“Are you going to treat me like a criminal now, too?!”
“You’ve been making my wife pay your living expenses and clean your house for seven months,” Daniel said, his voice cracking. “I was a coward, and I let it happen. I need to know how deep this goes.”
Twenty minutes later, Victor arrived at the apartment with his wife, Sarah, carrying a thick blue folder filled with bank deposit receipts, itemized bills, and text message printouts.
“When Sarah and I got married four years ago, Mom demanded money from her, too,” Victor explained, placing the folder on the table. “She called it a ‘family maintenance contribution.’ For two years, Sarah quietly paid her $200 every month.”
Daniel’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief.
“Then she demanded Sarah cover her auto insurance, buy her a new refrigerator, and pay for her vacation to Florida,” Victor added. “When we finally said no, Mom refused to speak to us for four months.”
Sarah looked gently at Clara.
“I cooked for all her parties too, Clara. I cleaned her apartment and listened to her tell everyone I was never good enough for her son.”
Teresa slammed her fist against the sofa armrest.
“I sacrificed my whole life for you boys!”
“And we appreciate that, Mom,” Victor replied steadily. “But raising your children doesn’t give you a blank check to extort their wives.”
Daniel picked up one of the bank deposit slips from three years ago.
“Why didn’t you ever tell me about this, Vic?”
“Mom made me swear never to bring it up,” Victor admitted. “She told me you were too sensitive and that you’d cut her off if you found out the truth.”
Teresa stood up, grabbing her purse.
“I’ve had enough of this utter disrespect!”
“No, Mom,” Daniel said softly. “We’re just getting started.”
He walked over to the dining table, sat down next to Clara, and took her hand in his.
“Clara was right,” Daniel said, looking his mother in the eye. “You humiliated her, and I protected you. Every single time I stayed quiet, I chose your comfort over my wife’s basic dignity.”
Clara felt a lump form in her throat. She had waited months to hear those words, even if they couldn’t instantly erase the damage.
Teresa glared at her youngest son as if he had stabbed her in the heart.
“So you’ve chosen her over your own mother.”
“It’s not a competition, Mom.”
“Wives come and go, Daniel. Your mother is forever.”
Clara stood up.
“That is your entire problem, Teresa. You genuinely believe that to keep your sons, you have to destroy every meaningful bond they form outside of you.”
“You don’t know a single thing about me!”
“I know you charged me a monthly fee for loving your son.”
Teresa had no comeback.
Victor closed the folder with a decisive snap.
“Starting today, there will be no more monthly payments from anyone. If you have a legitimate financial emergency, the two of us will discuss it together. But you will never again demand money, favors, or labor from our wives.”
