Clara felt the air leave her lungs. “He planned to take my daughter with his mistress?”
“After the FBI raided your cabin and arrested you, Richard was going to return from Panama acting like a devastated husband,” Edward revealed. “He was going to show Chloe the planted evidence, convince her that you had betrayed the family, and tell her that the only way to save her from public scandal was to flee the country with him and Daniela.”
When Chloe learned the full truth at the AG’s safe house, she broke down in tears. “He thought I would just accept a new life in Costa Rica while my mother rotted in a federal prison?”
“He believed he could buy your silence with a foreign lifestyle, money, and a luxury apartment,” Clara said, holding her daughter tightly.
“I loved him, Mom,” Chloe sobbed. “I loved my dad. But keeping his secret would have meant destroying you and destroying myself.”
To lure Richard back to the United States immediately, Investigator Vance used information provided by Edward: the CEO kept a secondary blue ledger containing master encryption codes. Chloe texted her father, claiming that while moving the suitcase, she had found a blue leather notebook hidden in her mother’s office safe.
Richard called her back within ten seconds. “Where is the notebook, Chloe? Did you read it?”
“First tell me why you bought one-way tickets to Costa Rica for me and Daniela,” Chloe demanded, her voice steady.
A heavy pause hung on the line. “Your mother is involved in illegal corporate activities you don’t understand, Chloe. I was trying to protect you.”
“Was Daniela going to ‘protect’ me, too?”
“Daniela was helping us start over!” Richard shouted. “If you stay in Texas, federal prosecutors will drag you into courtrooms and destroy your future! Come with me, and you’ll have everything you ever wanted!”
“Everything except my mother,” Chloe replied coldly. “I don’t want that future.”
Richard hung up, but border control logs confirmed he boarded a red-eye flight back to Texas that night.
State investigators placed a dummy blue ledger inside a filing cabinet at Clara’s textile warehouse. Chloe waited for her father at the family home, while Clara, her attorney, and armed officers stayed hidden inside the adjacent rooms.
Richard rushed through the front door, pulling Chloe into a frantic hug. “Pack your essentials right now. You’re staying at Daniela’s apartment tonight. We fly out tomorrow.”
“What about Mom?” Chloe asked.
“I can’t help her anymore,” Richard said, shaking his head.
“You never wanted to help her, Dad,” Chloe said softly. “You wanted to bury her under your crimes.”
Richard went pale as Clara stepped out of the hallway, flanked by two armed detectives.
“You… you were in the ICU,” Richard stammered, taking a step back.
“I was speaking with Edward Salgado,” Clara replied.
The name rendered Richard completely speechless.
“He’s alive, Richard,” Clara continued. “And he remembered the exact license plate of the truck that ran him off the road.”
Richard turned to his daughter, his eyes filled with disbelief. “You told her… from the very beginning.”
“Yes,” Chloe said, tears streaming down her face. “Because you used me as your errand girl. You put my name on the bank vault, my face on the security cameras, and my signature on the contract.”
“I would have never let them prosecute you, Chloe!” Richard yelled.
“Then why did you make sure my name was the only one on the paper trail?!”
Just then, Richard’s phone rang. It was Altavista’s CEO, Arthur Sterling. Richard answered on speakerphone, unaware that state prosecutors were recording every word.
“Did you get the blue ledger from the warehouse yet, Richard?” Sterling’s booming voice demanded. “Daniela is waiting at the secondary facility. If Clara gets in your way, eliminate her. We need those financial codes burned before sunrise.”
Richard took a slow step backward. “The… the notebook is at the warehouse.”
“Get it now!” Sterling ordered before hanging up.
Richard looked at Chloe, reaching for the warehouse keys on the kitchen counter. “I’ll come back for you, Chloe.”
“Don’t come back, Dad,” Chloe whispered. “There’s nothing left here for you.”
Thirty minutes later, Richard drove to an industrial warehouse in El Salto. CEO Arthur Sterling and Daniela Robles were waiting beside industrial paper shredders and a burning metal drum. When Sterling opened the blue notebook Richard handed him and found blank pages, he looked up in horror.
“We’ve been set up.”
