I Thought My Daughter’s Strange Bathing-Suit Habit Was Just a Phase… Then One Day in the Laundry Room, I Noticed Something That Made Me Start Asking Questions.

“You’re being jumpy, honey,” I told her one Tuesday.

She just looked down at her cereal bowl. “I’m just tired, Mama.”

I should have pushed. I should have asked more. But I wanted the peace in our house to stay. I wanted to believe that everything was as good as it looked on the surface.

Then came the incident with the laundry. I was folding a pile of her school clothes when I pulled out the leggings. They felt heavy. I reached inside and felt the cold, wet fabric of the bathing suit. It was soaking wet.

I walked into her room. She was sitting on her bed, staring at the wall.

“Mabel, why is this wet again?” I asked. I tried to sound gentle.

She pulled her knees up to her chest. She wouldn’t look at me. “It’s just hot,” she whispered.

I sat down next to her. I felt a cold knot in my stomach. “Mabel, it’s not hot outside. It’s barely sixty degrees.”

She started to shake. “I have to wear it, Mama.”

“Why, baby? Why do you have to wear it?”

She looked at the bedroom door, checking to make sure it was closed. Then she looked back at me, her eyes filling with tears. “You’re going to be mad at me if I tell you.”

“I could never be mad at you,” I said. My voice was shaking, too. “I promise.”

She took a long, shaky breath. “So it doesn’t hurt as much when he grabs.”

My heart didn’t shatter. It just stopped. My whole world stopped. The air in the room felt heavy and impossible to breathe.

“When who grabs, baby?” I whispered.

She didn’t have to say his name. I already knew. I felt it in my bones.
