“Protect us from what?”
Silence.
The secretary’s eyes filled with tears.
The twins stirred in her arms.
Then the older woman looked at the four children’s photographs printed on the document.
“There was a mistake,” she whispered.
“A mistake?”
Her husband’s voice rose.
“You’re calling this a mistake?”
His mother shook her head.
“No. The mistake happened years before you even met your wife.”
Everyone went silent.
The young wife slowly stood.
“What happened?”
The older woman looked directly at her.
“You were never supposed to know.”
The young wife felt a chill run through her.
Her husband stared at his mother.
“Tell us.”
But before the older woman could answer, one of the babies began crying.
The secretary stood and gently rocked the child.
Then she looked at the young wife.
“I never wanted this,” she whispered.
The young wife frowned.
“What don’t you want?”
The secretary swallowed hard.
“The money. The babies. The marriage. None of it.”
She glanced toward the DNA papers.
Then she said something that made the husband completely freeze.
“The twins aren’t the reason your mother paid you eighty million dollars.”
The young wife’s heart pounded.
“Then what is?”
The secretary looked at the four children’s photographs.
“Because one of those four children knows the truth about what happened.”
Everyone stared at her.
The husband stepped forward.
“What are you talking about?”
The secretary’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“Your family has been hiding the wrong child for years.”
The room fell silent.
Outside the windows, the last orange light disappeared behind the skyscrapers.
And suddenly, the eighty million dollars on the table no longer looked like payment for a divorce.
It looked like a price for silence.
And whatever secret those four DNA tests had uncovered…
was only the beginning.
