The noise hit me before the wind did.

“She’s wearing no rank,” Blackwood said. “No insignia. She could be anyone.”
“She’s exactly who she’s supposed to be,” Sloane said. “And you’ve just made her cover unusable.”
Blackwood blinked.
“Cover?”
Sloane gestured to the helicopter.
“We’re leaving. We’ll discuss the rest inside.”
A Marine lieutenant approached, clipboard in hand.
“Admiral, the ceremony—”
“Cancel it,” Blackwood ordered.
Too quickly.
Sloane caught the exchange. She didn’t say anything, but she saw it.
I saw it too.

“You’re saying Blackwood didn’t know who you were?”

Sloane waited.

The air left my lungs.

Sloane looked at Cole.

I stared at him.

The helicopter banked away from Rio.
Down below, I saw the café, the flashing lights, the tiny figure of Cole being led out in handcuffs.

“What is this?” I asked.

I stared at the card.

My jaw tightened.

My father leaned forward.

“Try me.”

“Why did you pretend to be dead?”

I looked at the photograph.
“And my mother? How is she involved?”

“She’s been working for you this entire time?”
“She’s been working for the truth.”
I believed him.
I didn’t want to, but I believed him.
The helicopter began its descent toward an island I couldn’t name. A single runway cut through dense jungle, lit only by small blue lights. We touched down at the far end, where a black van waited.
“Welcome to your new safe house,” my father said.
We stepped out into warm, humid air. The silence was thick after the rotors shut down.
“What about Blackwood?” I asked.

“He didn’t know what he was doing.”

I stopped.

My chest tightened.

We climbed inside. The interior was dim, with a small table bolted to the floor and a laptop secured to a frame.
I placed the microSD card on the table.
“This may blow your mind,” I said.

My father sat across from me.
“Your mother gave me this card before the rescue,” he said. “She said there was something else encoded inside. Something she didn’t tell even me.”
“What?”
“She said you’d know what to do with it.”
I took the card and inserted it into a reader attached to the laptop. A single file appeared, titled with a date that made my blood run cold.

I opened it.
It was a video recording.
My mother’s face appeared on the screen, younger, more tired, sitting in a room I recognized as my childhood home.
“Mara, if you’re seeing this, it means I didn’t make it out of Rio,” she said. Her voice was calm, steady.
“I need you to know the truth. Cross is your father.”
The room spun.
I looked up at my father.
He stared at the screen, face pale.
“That’s a lie,” he whispered.
The video continued.

I gripped the edge of the table.

The video flickered.

I couldn’t breathe.
“And he’s the one who ordered the attack that nearly killed you in Syria. He wanted you dead because you were going to find out the truth.”
The video ended.
Silence filled the van.
My father—the man I had called Dad my entire life—reached across the table and took my hand.
“Mara, look at me.”
I couldn’t.
“She’s lying,” he said. “Your mother is playing a deeper game.”
“She wouldn’t lie about something like this.”
“I don’t know what she would do anymore.”
I pulled my hand away.
“Then who am I?”
The van bumped over potholes as we drove deeper into the jungle.
The woman in the front seat, Dana Reyes, spoke without turning around.

“What?” I asked.

The laptop sat between us.
“Do it,” I said.
My father opened his mouth to object, then stopped. He looked old.
Dana pulled over.
She took a small kit from the glove compartment and swabbed the inside of my cheek.
Then she plugged the sample into a portable analyzer.
We waited.
The screen flickered, then displayed a result.
Match found.
I looked at the man across from me, the man who raised me, who taught me to ride a bike, who read me bedtime stories.
His face crumpled.
“I didn’t know,” he whispered.
“Did my mother know?”
“She must have.”
“Did you know?”
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
“No.”
I believed him.
The video had told me one thing, but the DNA had told me another. I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
Outside, the jungle pressed in around the van, dark and endless.
