My newborn needed me at the hospital. But my family expected me somewhere else. Then something unexpected happened.

Part 2 – My Six-Year-Old Saw Grandma Standing Beside the Ventilator

Brooklyn kept staring at the machine beside Rosalie’s incubator, and I could see how carefully she was choosing her words. I wanted answers immediately, but frightening her with my own panic would only make it harder for her to tell me what she remembered.

“What happened after Grandma went to Rosalie’s bed?”

Brooklyn pulled the blanket tighter around herself.

“She looked at the machine, and then she touched something.”

My heart started pounding, but I kept my voice steady.

“What did she touch?”

“I don’t know. The tube thing. Then the machine started making a different noise.”

I pressed the call button immediately.

Gloria entered moments later, and I told her exactly what Brooklyn had said without adding my own conclusions. Her expression changed when she heard that an unauthorized visitor might have approached Rosalie’s equipment during the night.

Kevin returned while Gloria was checking the ventilator and tubing. When I explained what Brooklyn had witnessed, he looked toward the door and asked the question already running through my mind.

“How did her mother get in here?”

Gloria did not speculate. She contacted the charge nurse, asked that the visitor records be reviewed, and told us the medical team would examine Rosalie’s chart for any unusual changes during the night.
