My newborn needed me at the hospital. But my family expected me somewhere else. Then something unexpected happened.

“She’s busy helping Aunt Courtney.”

I blocked all three numbers.

When Kevin returned from the cafeteria, I showed him the messages. He read them quietly before putting my phone aside and telling me I did not have to deal with any of them that night.

Hours later, our nurse Gloria brought the first hopeful news we had received all day. Rosalie’s numbers were improving, and if that continued, the doctors might begin discussing reducing her ventilator support within several days.

Then Gloria stopped at the door.

“The front desk says an older woman with silver hair is asking about the baby. She says she’s the grandmother.”

Every muscle in my body tightened.

“She is not authorized. Do not let her in.”

Gloria promised to update the visitor log. Twenty minutes passed without an argument in the hallway, and eventually Kevin checked outside and told me my mother seemed to have left.

That should have reassured me.

It didn’t.

My mother had never accepted the word no easily.
