My engagement party was supposed to be a celebration. Then my little girl led me to a hidden bag. Suddenly, my family’s story began to fall apart.

“Where is Lily?”

No one would answer me.

Thirty minutes before my engagement party, my four-year-old daughter had been standing near the dessert table holding a paper flower she had made for me.
Now she was missing.

My sister, Nicole, avoided my gaze.

My mother said sharply, “Stop being dramatic. Today is supposed to be about the family.”

Then I heard it.

A quiet cry.

From behind the catering tent.

I hurried outside and saw my father standing beside a large plastic trash bin.

“Dad?”

His expression changed.

I opened the lid.

My daughter was inside.

Curled against the wall.

Crying.

“Mommy!”

I lifted her out so quickly I almost stumbled.

“What happened?”

Lily wrapped herself around my neck.

“Aunt Nicole put me there. Grandpa helped her.”

I stared at them.

My mother walked outside.

“We needed space for Madison’s birthday setup.”

Madison was Nicole’s six-year-old daughter.

Their “perfect little princess.”

“You put my child inside a trash bin?”

Nicole rolled her eyes.

“It was empty.”
