My family thought they could explain away what happened to my daughter. I stayed calm and listened to her instead. What she showed me changed everything.

My engagement celebration was becoming a crime scene before anyone had even poured the champagne.

I lifted the hospital wristband.

Madison Nicole Hayes.

Age three.

St. Catherine Children’s Hospital.

I turned toward Nicole.

“You told everybody Madison had never been seriously ill.”

“She wasn’t.”

“Then explain this.”

My father abruptly said, “Cancel the party now.”
Evan stared at him.

“That’s what concerns you?”

Dad glanced toward the driveway.

“Just make everyone leave.”

His fear made me peer back inside the bag.

Beneath the bottles were envelopes.

Insurance records.

Copies of checks.

One payment caught my attention.

$18,500.

Issued through a children’s medical assistance fund.

Another one was for $12,000.

Then another.

Every one connected to Madison.

But I knew my sister.

She had excellent private insurance through her husband’s law firm.

She had never required charitable assistance.

Evan lifted one of the prescription bottles.

“The patient’s name is different.”

I checked it.

The bottle had been prescribed to a child named Emma Ruiz.

Another belonged to Tyler Brennan. A third belonged to Sophie Carter. None of those children belonged to our family.
