Everything inside me suddenly went cold.
Nicole pulled her daughter close.
“That’s enough.”
Madison started crying.
Evan looked toward me.
“Pretend?”
The first police cruiser arrived.
Then the truth finally broke open.
One officer reviewed the documents and immediately requested detectives.
Because Nicole wasn’t using Madison’s identity to obtain medical care.
She was using her daughter to support fraudulent applications for pediatric assistance programs.
The diverted prescriptions belonged to real children whose insurance claims had been redirected.
My parents had participated.
Dad had established a nonprofit six years earlier called Bright Tomorrow Kids.
I remembered those fundraisers.
The church donations.
The Facebook posts about supporting sick children.
Apparently, some of those children never received what generous donors funded.
Evan opened another envelope.
Inside was a photograph showing Nicole beside a hospital bed.
But Madison wasn’t there.
Another young girl was.
On the back someone had written:
Emma Ruiz fundraiser, $43,200 collected.
I stared directly at Nicole.
“Where did all that money go?”
She stayed silent.
Then my mother murmured, “Rachel, please. You need to understand why we did this.”
“We?”
Dad yelled, “Linda!”
Too late.
The detective arrived just as Mom covered her mouth.
He instructed everyone to move away from the bin.
Then Lily pulled my sleeve.
“Mommy?”
I crouched down.
She pointed toward another box underneath the black bag.
“That was underneath me too.”
The detective opened it.
Inside were passports.
Social Security cards.
Birth certificates.
Every one belonging to children.
And underneath them was one document displaying my daughter’s full name.
Lily Anne Parker.
My legs almost gave way.
Nicole turned away.
I stared directly at my mother.
“What were you going to do with my child’s identity?”
Nobody responded.
