Minutes before my engagement party, I found my daughter crying. Everyone tried to convince me it was nothing. Then she pointed to something hidden nearby.

Then Lily whispered against my shoulder.

“No, Mommy.”

I froze.

“What?”

“There was a bag.”

My father turned pale.

Lily pointed toward the bin.

A black contractor bag was tucked beneath several flattened cardboard boxes.

Something metallic showed through a tear.
I reached toward it.

Dad caught my wrist.

“Leave that alone.”

That was when my fiancé, Evan, came rushing around the corner.

I pulled my hand away and quickly opened the bag.

Inside were dozens of prescription containers, shredded financial statements, and a child’s hospital bracelet.

The name printed there wasn’t Lily’s.

It was Madison’s.

And the date was three years earlier than when Nicole claimed her daughter had ever received hospital care.

Nicole made a sudden grab for the bag.

Evan quickly moved between us.

“Step back.”

“It’s just trash,” she yelled.

“Then why are you freaking out?”

My mother seized my arm.

“Rachel, not here.”

I jerked free.

“My daughter was inside that container. We’re handling this right here.”

Guests were already gathering beside the tent.
