Minutes before my engagement party, I found my daughter crying. Everyone tried to convince me it was nothing. Then she pointed to something hidden nearby.

My stomach tightened.

“What is all this?”

Nicole’s expression hardened.

“You wouldn’t understand.”

“Then explain it.”

She didn’t.

My mother answered.

“She was helping families.”
I laughed with disbelief.

“By storing their medicine inside a garbage bag?”

Mom’s voice trembled.

“It wasn’t meant to be here.”

That statement silenced everybody.

Evan immediately phoned the police.

Dad shouted, “Put that phone down!”

“No.”

He stepped toward Evan.

Two of my friends quickly moved between them.

Then Madison appeared beside the back door.

She seemed confused.

“Mommy?”

Nicole hurried toward her.

But Madison noticed the bracelet in my hand.

Her expression changed.

“Is that from the hospital?”

Nicole froze.

I crouched down.

“Honey, which hospital?”

Nicole snapped, “Rachel, don’t interrogate my child.”

Madison answered anyway.

“The one Grandma brought me to.”

My mother turned pale.

“When?”

Madison shrugged.

“When Mommy told me I had to pretend my tummy hurt.”
