Dinner changed the moment my mother made an unexpected announcement. My sister thought the decision was already settled. Then my fiancé put down his fork and spoke.

Madison rolled her eyes. “You’re acting dramatic. I already switched the utilities.”

Ethan rose so quickly that his chair scraped across the hardwood.

“Show me the deed.”

Nobody moved.

Finally, Madison removed a folded copy from her purse and slid it across the table.

Ethan unfolded it.

I watched his eyes travel down the page.

Then freeze.

At the bottom sat my name.

My signature.

Except I had never signed anything.

Ethan glanced at me once, then toward my parents.

“That signature was forged.”

Mom’s face turned white.

And Madison’s smile disappeared.

Nobody said anything for several seconds.

The only noise came from the clock above the buffet ticking.

Forged.

Dad reached toward the document, but Ethan pulled it away.

“Where did this come from?”

Madison crossed her arms. “A lawyer handled everything.”
“Which lawyer?”

She paused.

That hesitation answered enough.

I took the deed from Ethan. The signature had clearly been copied from a wedding contract I had emailed Mom several months earlier.
