My daughter asked me to stay away from her wedding. I respected her decision and stayed quiet. Then the groom did something no one expected.

When she was little, she used to crawl into my bed on Saturday mornings and tell me that one day she would buy me a giant house with two kitchens.

Then she went to college.

During her junior year, she met Ethan.

At first, she told me everything about him.

“He’s smart, Mom.”

“How smart?”

“Annoyingly smart.”

I laughed.

“Then I already dislike him.”

She laughed too.

“No. You’d love him.”

I expected to meet Ethan soon.

But weeks became months.

Every time I asked, Lauren had another explanation.

He had exams.

His parents were traveling.

His father was busy.

Eventually, I stopped asking.

Then Lauren called me crying one afternoon.

“Mom, he proposed.”

I cried with her.

For a few minutes, she sounded like my little girl again.

Then I asked:

“So when do I finally meet this mysterious fiancé?”

Silence.

“Soon,” she said.

After that, Lauren became increasingly distant.

Calls became texts.

Texts became short replies.

Twice I invited her and Ethan to dinner.

Twice she canceled.

Three weeks before the wedding, Lauren finally came to my house.
