He thought the flowers would be the surprise that evening. Then he saw how his fiancée treated the maid. Suddenly, he questioned everything.

And after all that, she still cleaned bedrooms, organized laundry, and worked through the lists Olivia taped to the refrigerator every morning.

One afternoon, Michael found her carrying a stack of towels.

“Sophie, are you still taking classes?”

She stopped.

“Yes. Nursing assistant training.”

“At night?”

“Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.”

“What time do you normally leave here?”

Sophie hesitated.

“I’m supposed to finish at six, but sometimes I stay later.”

“Starting tomorrow, on the nights you have class, you leave at five-thirty.”

“You don’t have to do that.”

“I know. I want to.”

Sophie gave him a small smile.

Michael also quietly asked the household manager to increase her pay.

It didn’t seem like a major change.

But Olivia noticed.

One evening at dinner, Michael asked Sophie how her twelve-year-old brother, Ethan, was doing. Sophie had been helping support him since their mother became ill.

Olivia slowly lowered her fork.

When Sophie left the room, she asked:

“Since when do you know so much about her personal life?”

“Since I started asking.”

“You never used to.”

Michael took a sip of water.

“Maybe I should have.”

Olivia smiled.

Her eyes didn’t.

After that, something shifted.

Whenever guests were around, Olivia called Sophie “sweetheart” and praised how hardworking she was.

When no one important was present, her voice turned sharp.

The following Monday, Olivia asked Sophie to organize the remaining wedding invitations by city.

Hours later, with Michael standing nearby, Olivia acted confused.

“I asked you to arrange these alphabetically.”

Sophie went pale.

“Ma’am, you told me to sort them by city.”
