He arrived home early and quietly stopped at the kitchen door. What he witnessed changed how he saw his fiancée. The wedding was only three weeks away.

Olivia gave a soft laugh.

“Don’t make things up, Sophie. Just do them again.”

Michael watched.

He said nothing.

Two days later, his father, Robert, mentioned something over breakfast.

“Olivia says Sophie has been very distracted lately. Maybe you should consider replacing her before the wedding.”

Michael looked up.

“Sophie?”

“Yes. Apparently she keeps making mistakes.”

That didn’t fit with what Michael had been seeing.

And then something occurred to him that made his stomach tighten.

Olivia wasn’t simply treating Sophie badly.

She was slowly building a story about Sophie being careless and unreliable so that when the time came to fire her, everyone would assume Sophie deserved it.

Michael decided not to confront Olivia yet.

He wanted to be sure.

First, he spoke with Margaret.

“Grandma, I want Sophie to focus mostly on taking care of you.”

Margaret removed her glasses.

“Finally paying attention?”

Michael’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

She sighed.

“Nothing you shouldn’t figure out for yourself.”

That same day, Michael hired another person to handle the heavier cleaning and reorganized the household responsibilities.

Sophie would focus on Margaret’s care, work fixed hours, and have enough time to get to class.

When Olivia learned about it, she reacted immediately.

“Why did you change Sophie’s duties without talking to me?”

“Because Grandma needs consistent care.”

“I was counting on Sophie to help with the wedding.”

“We have other staff.”

Olivia stared at him.

“You’ve been changing a lot of things lately.”

“Maybe some things needed changing.”

Olivia didn’t answer.
