My husband embarrassed me at his business dinner. He had no idea what would happen next.

And then Julian delivered the final blow. “Go wait for me by the coat check. If the president of NovaMind arrives, I don’t want him seeing you sitting here.”

I stood up without arguing.

But before I took my second step, the restaurant’s heavy glass doors swung open. Six security guards entered first, clearing a path.

Behind them walked the man Julian had been desperately waiting for all evening.

My younger brother.

Arthur walked straight past the host, completely ignored my husband’s outstretched, eager hand, and stopped right in front of me. Before the entire crowded room, he bowed his head respectfully.

“Big sister,” Arthur said clearly. “Are these people bothering you?”

The wine glass in the hand of Julian’s boss slipped, shattering against the floor.

And my husband’s face went completely ghost-white.

PART 2

It took Julian several seconds to find his voice.

“There… there must be a mistake,” he stammered, his posture collapsing. “Mr. Vance, this is my wife. She runs a small flower shop. I pay her bills.”

Arthur looked at him as if he had just heard the most absurd joke in his life. “You pay her bills?”

Arthur’s executive assistant stepped forward, placing a thick leather dossier on the table.

Arthur didn’t even need to raise his voice. “Valerie sold her first logistics company for a sum you couldn’t read without sitting down. She then founded Altura Capital. NovaMind only exists because she provided our seed funding. And as of this morning, her private fund is the primary institutional investor in the merger your firm has been begging us to sign.”

Julian’s boss gripped the back of his chair so hard his knuckles turned white. Evelyn’s mouth hung open, but no sound came out.
