My husband kept removing his wedding ring before every trip. The real reason was nothing I expected.

Every time he packed for those trips, he did the same thing. He would shower, dress in a crisp, ironed shirt, and then stand by the dresser for a moment of quiet focus. Then, he would slide his gold wedding band off his finger and tuck it deep into the toe of a rolled wool sock. He didn’t hide it in a box or a drawer. He hid it in the laundry.

The first time I saw it, the air left the room. I felt that cold, familiar knot in my gut that every woman recognizes. I assumed the worst. I assumed he was playing the bachelor in some hotel bar in the city, using the excuse of business to go find someone else. I spent a week waiting for the other shoe to drop. I waited for the late-night messages or the weird excuses. But there was nothing.

I checked the bank logs until my eyes burned. There were no charges for romantic dinners or expensive gifts. His corporate account covered everything. His phone was an open book, clean of anything that looked like a secret. By the third trip, I stopped being the grieving wife and started being the archivist. I stopped looking for an affair and started looking for the discrepancy.
