PART 3
The name written clearly on the loan application was Rachel. Nobody spoke a single word for several long seconds while the wall clock ticked past two in the morning. My mother watched quietly from the hallway edge while Brandon stood paralyzed beside the sofa, staring at the paper as if hoping the letters would magically vanish.
The application requested a line of credit for one hundred and eighty thousand dollars. It contained my Social Security number, my full employment history, our home address, my annual salary, and a fake signature that attempted to imitate mine. Rachel was named as the recipient of the funds.
“Explain what this document is doing in your hands,” I said directly to Gertrude.
“I do not know what that paper is,” Gertrude lied, avoiding eye contact.
“It was tucked away inside my personal document folder, which you just opened,” I pressed on.
“Rachel simply asked me to retrieve a few papers for her,” Gertrude stammered quickly. “I had no idea what she intended to use them for.”
Brandon suddenly stepped forward with anger visible in his eyes.
“Did you actually hand over Abigail’s sensitive financial information to Rachel?” Brandon demanded.
“Do not make a huge scene out of this!” Gertrude snapped back defensively. “Your sister is going through a very difficult financial period right now.”
“And that somehow justifies taking out a massive loan in my name?” I interjected forcefully.
Gertrude crossed her arms tightly over her chest.
“Nothing has been finalized yet,” Gertrude insisted callously. “Besides, you earn a high salary at your job, so we could have easily paid the loan back in small monthly installments.”
I stared at her in utter disbelief. The most horrifying part was not just the attempted fraud, but the reality that she felt zero guilt and was only angry that she had been caught red-handed.
“Who was actually going to make those monthly payments?” I asked pointedly.
Gertrude slowly shifted her gaze over to Brandon without saying a word.
A sharp realization hit me like a physical blow.
“You knew about this,” I said, looking directly at my husband.
“Not about this application,” Brandon answered instantly, shaking his head.
“Not about this specific document?” I repeated coldly. “Then what exactly did you know about?”
The silence in the room became heavy and suffocating. Brandon ran both hands over his face, unable to look me in the eye.
“I knew my mother was redirecting part of my salary to help Rachel out,” Brandon admitted in a low voice. “And occasionally, I sent additional electronic transfers directly to her.”
“How much money did you give her total?” I questioned relentlessly.
“I am not entirely sure,” Brandon murmured softly.
“Yes, you know the exact amount,” I pushed further.
“It was probably around one hundred and twenty thousand dollars over the last two years,” Brandon confessed quietly.
My mother let out a quiet sigh from the shadows of the hallway. During those exact two years, I had been paying off the remaining mortgage balance, property taxes, household groceries, daycare tuition, health insurance, and home repairs completely on my own. Whenever I suggested making a nice purchase for our home, Brandon always insisted that we needed to strictly budget our money.
“While you were constantly lecturing me about saving every penny, you were secretly funding your sister’s lifestyle,” I said with deep bitterness.
“It was my own hard-earned money,” Brandon argued back weakly.
“It was your money, but this is my home, my career, and my personal credit score,” I declared firmly. “Now you finally understand why I am putting a stop to this behavior.”
Gertrude quickly chimed in again.
“In a real family, relatives are supposed to support each other without keeping score,” Gertrude stated arrogantly.
My mother, who almost never raised her voice to anyone, stepped into the living room light.
“Supporting family means sharing what you can spare freely,” Beatrice said with clear authority. “Stealing legal documents and forging signatures is a crime.”
“Mind your own business and stay out of our family affairs!” Gertrude snapped viciously at my mother.
I immediately stood directly in front of Beatrice to block Gertrude.
“You will never speak to my mother with disrespect ever again,” I warned her in a low voice.
Brandon closed his eyes tightly before turning to face his mother directly.
“Mom, you need to pack your things and leave with Rachel tomorrow morning,” Brandon announced softly.
“What did you just say to me?” Gertrude asked, her voice cracking in shock.
“You are leaving this apartment,” Brandon repeated more firmly.
“Are you honestly throwing your own mother out because of her?” Gertrude cried, pointing dramatically at me.
“No,” Brandon answered directly. “I am asking you to leave because you were going through my wife’s private documents in the middle of the night and because you participated in a fraudulent loan scheme using her identity.”
Gertrude began weeping loudly, letting her tears fall freely.
“I raised you all by myself,” Gertrude wailed frantically. “I sacrificed everything for your future, and this is how you choose to repay my devotion?”
“I spent years defending your actions even when you were completely in the wrong,” Brandon replied tiredly. “I cannot defend this behavior anymore.”
Gertrude struck his chest repeatedly with her fists in frustration.
“That woman has corrupted your mind against your own blood!” Gertrude screamed.
Brandon gently held her hands to stop the striking and stepped back.
“I will personally drive you over to Rachel’s house tomorrow morning,” Brandon said quietly.
I gathered my passport, Paisley’s birth certificate, and the forged loan document into a secure folder before taking detailed photos of every single page on my phone.
The following morning, I contacted the credit union listed on the application. Fortunately, no loan had been officially approved, though a preliminary application had been submitted using my identity. The fraud department locked the application, filed an official report, and flagged my information. I updated all my security passwords and placed fraud alerts on my credit reports. I did not care about getting revenge on anyone; I simply needed to guarantee that my name would never be used as a shared family resource ever again.
Gertrude exited the small office around nine that morning dragging two large suitcases behind her. She had stopped her shouting entirely.
Paisley was sitting at the table eating pancakes with my mother. When Gertrude spotted her granddaughter, she opened her arms wide with a fake smile.
“Come give your grandmother a goodbye hug, sweetheart,” Gertrude called out sweetly.
Paisley looked up at me uncertainly. I remained silent, letting my daughter decide for herself. Paisley gently shook her head from side to side.
“I do not want to give you a hug,” Paisley said quietly.
“Why not, my sweet girl?” Gertrude asked, her voice trembling.
“Because you were mean and yelled at my mommy,” Paisley answered honestly.
Gertrude froze in place as the words sank in. She slowly lowered her arms, looked down at the floor, and walked out the front door without another word.
“Someday you will finally understand the pain of having a child turn their back on you,” Gertrude muttered to me as she stepped into the hallway.
The dramatic statement did not hurt my feelings in the slightest. It merely confirmed that Gertrude had never viewed Brandon as an adult with his own family to protect, but rather as a lifelong possession that belonged to her.
Brandon carried her suitcases downstairs to the car and drove away. He returned nearly three hours later with a defeated expression on his face.
“Rachel refused to let my mother move into her house,” Brandon revealed, sitting down heavily at the kitchen table.
“I am not surprised by that at all,” I replied calmly.
“Rachel claimed her son needed the extra room for his studies and insisted Mom belonged here because we have a larger apartment,” Brandon explained quietly. “In the end, I had to drive her across town to stay at my grandmother Lorraine’s house.”
I sat down in the chair directly opposite him.
“Now you and I need to have an honest conversation about our future,” I stated clearly.
I pulled out a thick folder containing years of bank statements, tax documents, and household receipts. For years, I had avoided scrutinizing every single purchase because turning a marriage into an accounting ledger felt cold and unloving. That naivety was officially over.
I laid out the original purchase documents for our apartment, showing the initial down payment funded entirely by my father’s inheritance and my personal savings. I showed him the monthly mortgage receipts drawn directly from my individual checking account alongside every major household bill.
“You contributed far less to this household than you assumed you did,” I pointed out directly. “The vast majority of your income was diverted to your mother and Rachel.”
Brandon rubbed his forehead in deep exhaustion.
“I honestly never realized it added up to that much money,” Brandon confessed quietly.
“That is the core problem,” I replied firmly. “You chose to close your eyes so you would never have to think about it.”
He looked across the table at me with complete defeat in his eyes.
“Abigail, I am so deeply sorry for everything,” Brandon whispered.
“I never asked you to completely abandon your mother,” I explained softly. “I asked you to make your wife and your daughter your top priority. Every single time Gertrude crossed an acceptable line, you demanded that I back down just to keep the peace. When she raised her hand to strike me yesterday, your immediate concern was asking about the discarded meat.”
