Emily also began seeing a counselor to help her process what had happened.
One evening, she sat beside me on the couch.
“Mom, are we safe now?”
I pulled her close.
“Yes,” I told her. “And if anyone ever makes you feel unsafe again, you tell me immediately.”
That night, I finally understood something I had ignored for years.
