I boarded my wife’s flight to surprise her. Then the pilot made an announcement I never expected.

I stared at the doctor.

“So… it is possible that I could be a biological father?”

He swallowed.

“Based on the past and current review, yes.”

Everything inside me went cold.

Laura hadn’t betrayed me.

I had trusted a medical result from years earlier more than I trusted my wife.

Worse, I hadn’t even stopped to request a DNA test before abandoning her.

And those test results weren’t even mine.

I told the administrator the clinic would be hearing from me again.

But first, there was something more important I had to fix.

I left carrying copies of every record.

Then I sat in my car for almost an hour, gripping the steering wheel while the full truth settled over me.

Laura had gotten the miracle we thought we would never have.

And my response had been to accuse her of cheating and leave her pregnant and alone.

Because I had believed the worst thing about the woman I loved faster than I had believed her.

I called Laura three times.

No answer.

I drove toward our house twice and lost my nerve both times.

I wrote texts and deleted them.

Every explanation looked ridiculous on a screen.

Sorry, I accused you of adultery because a clinic mixed up my fertility results with another man’s.

It sounded insane.

Because it was insane.

By the end of that week, I knew I had to tell her face-to-face.

I waited outside her obstetrician’s office because an old calendar reminder gave me a rough idea of when one of her appointments would be.
