“Derek was part of the Harbor Point redevelopment project four years ago. He kept reporting problems with some of the crew equipment. He said replacements had been requested several times but kept getting delayed because the project was already behind schedule.”
She pushed an email toward Adrian.
“He sent this eleven days before the accident.”
Adrian read it.
The message was straightforward.
Derek had requested replacement equipment and warned that continuing without it could create unnecessary risk.
Another email mentioned budget approval.
Another discussed keeping the project on schedule until new supplies arrived.
Marissa’s voice became unsteady.
“Eleven days later, Derek never came home.”
Adrian slowly lowered the paper.
Russell entered the apartment.
“The matter was investigated and resolved years ago.”
Marissa looked directly at him.
“You told me that when I was seven months pregnant.”
Russell’s expression remained controlled.
“Mrs. Keane, you were offered assistance.”
“You offered me money to sign papers I barely understood.”
She pulled another document from the envelope.
“You told me fighting the company would take years and that I would probably walk away with nothing.”
Adrian looked at Russell.
“Is that true?”
“It was a standard settlement discussion.”
Marissa shook her head.
“There was nothing standard about sitting across from three lawyers while carrying a child whose father wasn’t coming home.”
The room became silent.
Then another voice appeared from the doorway.
“Adrian, enough.”
His Mother Had Known All Along
Celeste Whitmore entered the apartment wearing an ivory wool coat, her silver hair perfectly arranged despite the rain outside.
Adrian stared at her.
“You followed me too?”
Celeste looked at Marissa before answering.
“Russell called me. Thankfully.”
Adrian picked up Derek’s email.
“Did you know about this?”
His mother sighed.
“I knew there had been an incident. Your father handled those matters when he was alive.”
“Did he know Derek had reported the equipment?”
Celeste’s expression hardened.
“You are asking questions about decisions made years ago by people managing a complicated company.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Marissa remained near the crib, holding Owen.
Celeste glanced at her.
“And now this woman happens to work inside your home. Surely you don’t find that suspicious?”
Marissa’s cheeks reddened.
“I didn’t know Mr. Whitmore ran the company when I took the housekeeping job. I applied through an agency.”
“Convenient.”
Marissa straightened.
“Mrs. Whitmore, there is nothing convenient about raising a baby alone and counting coins at the grocery store.”
Adrian looked at his mother.
For perhaps the first time, he saw the distance between the world she inhabited and the one Marissa was trying desperately to survive.
Russell stepped closer.
“Adrian, nothing here proves personal wrongdoing on your part. Leave this alone and let us manage it.”
That sentence made the decision for him.
Leave this alone.
Perhaps that was exactly how his family had protected itself for years.
Adrian opened one grocery bag and removed the formula.
He handed it to Marissa.
“Feed Owen first.”
Her hands were trembling.
Adrian found a clean bottle while Marissa showed him how much water to use.
For several minutes, the argument stopped.
Owen began drinking.
Everyone stood quietly around the tiny apartment.
Adrian watched the baby settle against his mother.

That was all Marissa had needed that morning.

Adrian stepped toward the window and called Howard Bell, a retired operations executive who had worked with his father for more than twenty years.
Howard had left Whitmore Infrastructure after several disagreements with Russell Vance.
At the time, Adrian had never asked why.
Now he did.
“Howard, I need you to help me reopen an old project file.”
“Which one?”
“Harbor Point. Derek Keane.”
Silence.
Then Howard said something Adrian would never forget.
“So somebody finally opened that file.”
Adrian turned toward Russell.
“You knew?”
Howard continued.
“I knew Derek raised concerns. I also knew people were under enormous pressure to keep that project on schedule. After I questioned how the matter was handled, I was told to stop creating problems.”
Adrian felt his stomach turn.
“I want an independent review of everything. Equipment orders, internal emails, complaints, settlements, all of it.”
Russell stepped forward.
“Think carefully about what you’re doing.”
Adrian looked at him.
“That’s exactly what I’m doing for the first time.”
Celeste shook her head.
“Your father spent forty years building this company.”
Adrian looked around Marissa’s apartment.
At the old heater.
At the carefully counted diapers.
At Derek’s papers preserved inside plastic because his wife could not afford to lose the only evidence she had.
“Then I need to know what it was built on.”
What They Found in the Archived Files
The next forty-eight hours changed everything.
Howard assembled an independent review team.
Archived emails were recovered.
Former employees agreed to speak.
Purchase requests showed that replacement equipment had been delayed.
Several internal warnings had been marked as non-urgent because managers were trying to meet project deadlines.
Then other names began appearing.
Other families.
Other complaints.
Different projects, but familiar patterns.
Concerns had been minimized.
Reports had been rewritten in softer language.
