Andrew swallowed.
“I know.”
“But she is alive,” Natalie said. “And now you are, too.”
The ambulance doors closed.
At the hospital, Andrew was treated for dehydration, exposure, and the injury to his leg.
Ashley remained under observation while her body slowly responded to fluids and food.
They were placed on different floors at first.
Andrew asked every person who entered his room whether he could see her.
The answer stayed no until both medical teams agreed it was safe.
That waiting mattered.
It kept the reunion from becoming a clean picture that erased the danger.
Ashley had spent four days hungry and terrified.
Andrew had made a reckless choice before becoming the victim of an accident.
Love explained why he left for medicine.
Love did not make leaving her alone safe.
When Natalie told him that, he did not argue.
He looked down at his bandaged hands.
“I was ashamed to ask for help,” he said. “Everybody already thought I couldn’t do this by myself.”
That was the part no road receipt could show.
Andrew had been raising Ashley alone since her mother left years earlier.
He worked, cooked, handled school forms, kept appointment cards in a chipped mug, and stretched groceries until payday.
He also hid how close to the edge they had become.
He told neighbors they were fine.
He told the school he could manage.
He told himself that needing help would confirm every whisper he heard about a single father failing his daughter.
So when Ashley became sick and the pantry ran low, he chose the fastest solution he could see.
Thirty minutes.
A quick pharmacy run.
A quick grocery stop.
A promise meant to calm her.
The storm turned that promise into four days.
The next morning, Diane’s correction appeared beneath the original video.
She wrote that Andrew’s truck had gone off a washed-out road while he was returning with medicine and food.
She wrote that he had been found alive.
She wrote that Ashley was receiving care.
Then she added the sentence she had avoided.
“I accused a father before I knew whether he was alive. I was wrong.”
Other neighbors followed.
One removed a post.
Another called the hospital and asked where groceries could be delivered.
A third admitted that Andrew had asked months earlier whether anyone knew an affordable after-school program, and no one had followed up.
The neighborhood did not become noble overnight.
Some people corrected themselves because they were embarrassed.
Some did it because the truth had frightened them.
Some still tried to excuse their comments by saying the scene had looked bad.
Natalie refused to let the new story become another easy judgment.
At a brief meeting in the hospital hallway, she told the neighbors who had arrived with bags and flowers that Andrew’s accident did not cancel the risk Ashley had faced.
“She needed help before the truck went off that road,” Natalie said. “Not after the video went around.”
No one had a clever answer.
Diane lowered her eyes toward the grocery bags at her feet.
“What can we do that actually helps?”
Natalie pointed toward the room where a hospital worker was helping Andrew make a written safety plan.
“Ask him when he’s ready,” she said. “And listen to the answer.”
That afternoon, Ashley was wheeled into Andrew’s room.
She looked smaller beneath the hospital blanket than she had in his oversized T-shirt.
Buddy rested in her lap.
Andrew pushed himself upright despite the pain in his leg.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Ashley stared at his face.
Andrew stared at the child he had imagined alone every hour he was trapped.
Then Ashley lifted the stuffed puppy.
“You forgot Buddy’s water.”
Andrew made a broken sound and covered his mouth with his bandaged hand.
“I’m sorry.”
“You said thirty minutes.”
“I know.”
“You were gone four days.”
“I know.”
She did not rush into his arms.
She had earned the right not to.
Andrew lowered his hand and let the silence remain honest.
“I should have found somebody to stay with you,” he said. “I thought being fast was the same as keeping you safe. It wasn’t.”
Ashley looked down at Buddy.
“Are you leaving again?”
“Not without telling you where I’m going, who is staying with you, and when I will call.”
“What if you’re late?”
