The green alarm light told me someone had entered the house. Then I realized my daughter had let them inside. Everything suddenly made sense.

No smashed lamp.

No drawers hanging open.

No jewelry thrown aside.

If somebody had entered that house looking for valuables, they had shown remarkable restraint.

That thought registered somewhere in the back of my mind.

Then I reached the hallway.

Farther down, a backpack strap crossed the floor.
