My in-laws blamed me while my husband was in the hospital. They demanded I sign the paperwork immediately. I calmly refused and made one decision.

Emily’s face lost its color.
For half a second, nobody moved.
Not my mother-in-law.
Not my father-in-law.
Not even the nurse standing beside the trauma-room doors.
Emily stared at me as though I had just reached into her pocket and pulled out a secret she had buried there herself.
Then her expression hardened.
“You went through my phone?”
“No.”
I held her gaze.
“You showed me.”
Her eyebrows drew together.
“When?”
“Three minutes after I arrived.”
I lifted my own phone and tapped the screen.
“You were standing beside the vending machines when your phone rang. You pulled it out, declined the call, and opened your recent calls immediately afterward.”
Emily said nothing.
“I saw Jason’s name.”
My mother-in-law looked between us.
“Sarah, what does any of this have to do with his condition?”
“Everything.”
I turned back to Emily.
“Because Jason told me he was called into the office tonight.”
My father-in-law swallowed.
“And now we know that wasn’t true.”
Emily folded her arms.
“We were working.”
“At your apartment?”
“The office building locks certain floors after midnight.”
“That’s strange.”
I tilted my head.
“Because Jason’s company has twenty-four-hour security access for senior employees.”
That stopped her.
