I thought coming home early would be a happy surprise. Then I saw how my mother had been treated while I was away. I knew something had to change.

“Protected family assets,” I replied smoothly, setting my mug down.

“You can’t freeze my accounts!”

“They aren’t your accounts, Wendy.”

She laughed sharply, incredulous. “Half of everything in this house is mine!”

“No,” I said calmly. “Half of what we acquired together during the marriage may be subject to division. The trust assets are separate property established prior to our wedding, and Mom’s stolen retirement funds are now active federal evidence.”

Her sunglasses came off. For the very first time in six years, Wendy looked genuinely terrified.

Then she made her second catastrophic mistake.

She stepped forward and slapped me hard across the face.

My mother saw it from the hallway.

So did the hidden camera mounted above the foyer.

PART 3
The doorbell rang less than twenty minutes later.

Wendy froze in the entryway as I pulled the door open. Two uniformed police officers stood on the porch alongside an investigator from Adult Protective Services and a bank fraud specialist holding a thick document case.

Wendy’s arrogant posture returned instantly. She stepped in front of the officers, smoothing her hair. “Officers, thank God you’re here. This is an absurd misunderstanding. Luca is upset because his senile mother had a fall while he was out of town.”

The investigator stepped past her into the foyer. “Mrs. Mercer, we have the cloud video footage.”

Silence fell over the room.

Wendy’s face drained of every ounce of color.

I placed my phone on the kitchen island, tapped the screen, and played the audio file.

Wendy’s own voice echoed loudly off the high ceilings:

“You’ll eat when I decide you’ve earned it.”

Jessi flinched softly beside me.

Panic seized Wendy. She lunged blindly across the island to grab the phone, but the lead police officer instantly stepped into her path, his hand resting firmly on his belt.

“Don’t do that, ma’am,” the officer warned sternly.

“This is my private property!” she shrieked, her voice cracking hysterically. “Get out of my house!”

“Actually,” my attorney announced, stepping through the open front door with his briefcase, “the residence is held under the Luca Mercer Separate Property Trust, established two years prior to your marriage.”

Wendy stared at me, her mouth agape. I had never lied to her about my pre-marital finances. She had simply never bothered to read any legal document that didn’t immediately benefit her.

My attorney continued seamlessly. “We have also filed an emergency court petition freezing all assets connected to Elaine Mercer’s estate. The corporate receiving account tied to VLM Lifestyle Holdings has been legally restrained pending criminal investigation.”

Wendy opened her mouth to argue, but no sound came out.
