Valerie went ghost-white. “He wants to lock me away.”
“He wants to discredit you before we can fully authenticate the files on that drive,” Vega replied. “I need a few hours to process the digital forensic chain of custody and secure federal arrest warrants. But you two have to walk into that courtroom today.”
Teresa stared at her former trainee in utter disbelief.
“You want us to walk straight into a courtroom presided over by a judge who’s bought and paid for?”
“Yes.”
“Without visible federal protection?”
“Yes.”
“You’ve got to be out of your mind, Vega.”
Agent Vega held her former mentor’s glare. “If I deploy federal agents before the warrants are formally signed by a magistrate, his attorneys will claim federal overreach and fruit of the poisonous tree. I need Castaneda to act corruptly on camera, on the official court record. I need Roderick to believe he’s already won.”
At 8:47 AM, Teresa and Valerie walked through the heavy doors of the Miami-Dade Family Courthouse.
Valerie was wearing clean clothes provided by the federal team and carried an independent medical evaluation from a hospital ER.
Her face was still heavily bruised.
Roderick was already sitting at the petitioner’s table.
Beside him sat four high-priced defense attorneys, his socialite mother, and two uniformed orderlies from an elite private psychiatric facility.
When he saw Valerie walk in, Roderick smiled.
Not with relief.
With absolute ownership.
Judge Castaneda took the bench at 9:03 AM.
He didn’t even look at Valerie before opening the file.
Roderick’s lead attorney launched into a practiced monologue about “paranoia,” “emotional instability,” and “substance-induced delusion.” He submitted sworn statements from two doctors on Roderick’s payroll and cherry-picked, edited text messages.
Teresa stood up and requested to present the hospital’s forensic injury report.
Judge Castaneda dismissed it with a wave of his hand. “This court is not conducting a domestic violence trial today, Mrs. Salgado.”
Valerie stood up beside her mother, her voice clear and ringing through the room.
“Perhaps you should be, Your Honor, considering the man petitioning for control over my life is the man who inflicted these injuries on me last night.”
Roderick lowered his head, feigning deep sorrow. His mother even crossed herself in the gallery.
Valerie continued, refusing to back down. “For three years, he told me no one would ever believe me. He cut off my access to my own money, monitored my phone, and controlled every breath I took. Last night, he beat me because I told him I wanted a divorce.”
Judge Castaneda barely glanced up from his desk. “Your emotional outburst merely confirms a deep-seated persecutory delusion, Mrs. Vance.”
Teresa clenched her fists so tightly her knuckles turned white.
The fix was entirely in.
Castaneda picked up his gold pen and signed the order. “Emergency temporary medical guardianship and full asset administration are hereby granted to the petitioner, Roderick Vance.”
Roderick’s smile widened.
The two psychiatric orderlies stepped forward, reaching for Valerie’s arms.
Teresa stepped directly between them. “Touch her and you’ll find out what twenty-eight years in homicide taught me.”
Judge Castaneda slammed his gavel down. “Mrs. Salgado! Interfere with this order and I will have you remanded into custody for contempt immediately!”
Roderick stood up from his chair, adjusting his suit jacket. “Game over, Valerie. Let’s go home.”
Valerie looked him dead in the eye.
For the first time in three years, she didn’t look down.
“No.”
Roderick’s charming mask slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing the monster underneath. “You don’t have a choice.”
At that exact moment, the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom burst open.
Six federal agents stepped inside, flanked by an Assistant United States Attorney and two digital forensics experts.
Behind them walked Agent Marisol Vega.
There was no shouting. No spectacle.
Just federal authority.
