“Everything you have is because of me,” my husband said confidently. I simply smiled and said nothing. He never expected what happened next.

Something inside me became very still.

I looked at Weston.

“You’re taking Sloane?”

His jaw tightened.

“Don’t make this uncomfortable.”

“You’re my husband.”

“And you’re making a scene.”

I almost laughed.

I was standing quietly in my own kitchen while another woman held my husband’s arm, yet somehow I was the one making a scene.

Weston stepped closer and lowered his voice.

“You should remember what your life looked like before me.

You had a tiny apartment, an old car, and no connections.

Everything you have now came because you married into this family.”

I studied his face.

“Is that really what you believe?”

“It’s the truth.”

No, I thought.

It was simply the truth he had chosen to believe.

Ten minutes later, I watched from the window as Weston opened the limousine door for Sloane.

Claudia and Tatum climbed in behind them.

Then, just before getting into the car, Weston placed his hand against Sloane’s waist and kissed her.

I did not cry.

I simply stopped hoping.

The Room No One Knew Existed

The house became silent after the limousine disappeared beyond the gates.

For years, I had mistaken patience for loyalty.

I had convinced myself that ignoring insults made me mature.

I told myself that Claudia’s constant criticism came from insecurity.

I excused Tatum’s jokes about my clothes.

I overlooked Weston’s late nights, secretive phone calls, and growing distance.

I kept waiting for the man I had married to return.

The man who once shared a paper cup of coffee with me beneath a gas station awning during a summer storm.

The man who once told me, “If I ever make you feel alone in a room full of my family, tell me, and I’ll fix it.”

That man had disappeared slowly.

Tonight, I finally admitted it.

I removed my apron and walked downstairs.

Beyond the wine cellar was a narrow hallway ending at what appeared to be a paneled wall.

I pressed my thumb against a concealed scanner.

The wall unlocked.

Behind it was my private office.

Three monitors illuminated the room.

Financial reports, legal documents, board correspondence, investment summaries, and encrypted communications filled the screens.
