I imagined her somewhere alone, believing that her mother had chosen a new husband over her.
And through all of it, Rick was there.
He held me when I cried.
He told me we would find her.
He told me she would eventually understand.
I believed him.
I had no idea how much he already knew.
Then, one Sunday afternoon, someone pounded on our front door.
Not a polite knock.
A hard, desperate pounding.
I ran toward it.
When I opened the door, I nearly stopped breathing.
Anna was standing on the porch.
She had a backpack over one shoulder.
She was thinner than I remembered.
Her hair was tangled.
Her eyes were swollen from crying.
She looked exhausted.
And somehow, she looked far older than eighteen.
“Baby…”
I reached for her.
I wanted to pull her into my arms.
But before I could touch her, she stepped backward.
Then she looked past me.
Straight at Rick.
The second he saw her, his face went white.
Not surprised.
Not relieved.
Terrified.
That was when something inside me changed.
“What is going on?” I demanded.
Anna’s eyes filled with tears.
She looked at me.
Then at Rick.
“Ask your husband,” she said.
Her voice was shaking.
“Ask him why I really left.”
Rick stared at the floor.
He couldn’t move.
“What does Anna mean?” I asked.
My own voice was trembling now.
“What did you do?”
Anna walked into the living room.
She dropped her backpack beside the couch.
Then she looked at me and said a name I hadn’t heard in nearly twenty years.
“William.”
My stomach tightened.
William.
That name belonged to a part of my life I had buried so deeply that I had almost convinced myself it no longer existed.
My first love.
A person from my teenage years.
Someone I hadn’t spoken to in decades.
I looked at Rick.
He still couldn’t meet my eyes.
“How do you know that name?” I asked Anna.
She took a breath.
“Because Rick knows him.”
The room seemed to tilt.
“What?”
Anna explained everything.
Three weeks before the wedding, she had been looking for Rick’s passport.
While searching through a drawer, she had found old photographs.
One showed me standing beside William when I was nineteen.
Another showed the two of us together as a young couple.
Anna recognized me immediately.
But she also recognized something else.
The photographs were in Rick’s possession.
She confronted him.
She asked him why he had pictures of her mother with a man from her past.
And that’s when Rick told her that William was his estranged half brother.
My mind went blank.
William was Rick’s half brother?
How had I never known?
Why had Rick never told me?
Anna had asked him directly.
Instead of telling me the truth, Rick urged her to stay quiet.
He told her not to interfere with the wedding.
He convinced her that revealing the past would only destroy our family.
But Anna couldn’t accept that.
She wanted answers.
On the morning of my wedding, she had begged me not to go through with it.
And I had misunderstood her fear.
I thought she was struggling with the idea of change.
I thought she was afraid of losing her place in my life.
I never imagined she had discovered something that could completely change our understanding of the past.
Now she was home.
And she had spent the previous month searching for William.
What she found was about to rewrite twenty years of my life.
William was alive.
And when Anna found him, he told her something I had never heard before.
He said he had tried to contact me repeatedly after we were separated as teenagers.
He had written letters.
Again and again.
He had tried to reach me.
But I had never received a single one.
Then he told Anna why.
He had trusted Rick to deliver them.
Rick had never done it.
Instead, he had intercepted the letters.
And eventually, according to William, Rick created a message that made William believe I wanted nothing more to do with him.
I sat there listening, struggling to understand how the person I had trusted with my future could have been manipulating my past for so long.
Then came another revelation.
Rick admitted that when we were young, their father had offered him tuition assistance and help with his mother’s rent in exchange for keeping William and me apart.
Rick had accepted.
He had made a decision about two teenagers’ lives because someone had given him something he needed.
But the betrayal didn’t end there.
Years later, after learning that my first husband, Daniel, had died, Rick knowingly found me again.
He knew who I was.
