PART 3
In the six days leading up to the grand corporate gala, I played the part of the fragile, unravelling wife perfectly. Whenever Christopher brought up my supposedly failing mental health, I simply nodded timidly and feigned confusion, ensuring that every single conversation was recorded on my phone and forwarded directly to my legal team.
I had also secretly saved a liquid sample from an anniversary dinner we shared earlier that week. Christopher had reached across the table to touch my hand while subtly sliding his fingers over my wine glass when he thought I was looking away. I had pretended to take a sip, feigned a sudden dizzy spell, and poured the remaining liquid into a sealed glass vial in my purse. The independent laboratory results came back two days later, confirming the wine was laced with a high dose of a dangerous prescription sedative I had never been prescribed.
Additionally, a brave young staff accountant at his firm named Chloe came forward after realizing she was being set up to take the fall for Christopher’s fraudulent accounting schemes. Chloe handed over a thumb drive containing thousands of internal emails, forged wire instructions, and altered tax documents, which allowed state prosecutors to quietly open a massive criminal file against my husband.
The most heartbreaking confrontation came from Beatrice, who dropped by my office three days before the event to pressure me once more. “Christopher has sacrificed so much for you over the years, Gwen,” she snapped impatiently. “Your father has been dead for years, so stop acting like that old house is a sacred shrine.”
“Have you sacrificed anything yourself to help his company, Beatrice?” I asked softly, staring right into her cold eyes.
She went completely silent, refusing to meet my gaze.
My attorney had pulled public property records that morning and discovered that Beatrice had signed a massive four million dollar mortgage guarantee against her own suburban home in Milwaukee to secure a high interest loan for Christopher months ago. She truly believed the funds were used to save her son’s software company, but bank statements showed that Christopher had transferred the entire sum directly to Valerie the very next morning to pay for a luxury penthouse suite in downtown Atlanta.
I chose not to reveal the truth to Beatrice just yet, because I wanted her to hear it in front of the very high society elite she loved to boast to.
On Friday night, the grand ballroom of the luxury hotel in Detroit was packed with wealthy venture capitalists, prominent news journalists, and major corporate creditors. Christopher stood near the main entrance wearing a expensive tuxedo, flashing a brilliant smile for the press cameras, while Valerie stood beside him in a glittering red evening gown, resting her hand proudly over her pregnancy bump. Beatrice sat at a VIP table right near the main stage, glowing with arrogance as if her son were about to receive a lifetime achievement award.
I walked into the ballroom twenty minutes late, wearing a simple navy blue dress and the vintage gold bracelet my father had given me when I graduated from architecture school. Christopher froze for a brief second when he spotted me, but quickly recovered his composure and stepped forward to greet me under the flashing lights.
“I am so glad you felt strong enough to make it tonight, my love,” Christopher said smoothly into a nearby reporter’s microphone.
He then walked up to the main stage, cleared his throat, and began delivering a polished speech about corporate growth, family values, and perseverance. “During difficult personal trials, you truly learn who stands by your side,” Christopher announced dramatically to the crowd. “Because of my dear wife Gwen’s tragic, ongoing health struggles and delicate mental state, she has decided to step down from her design firm tonight and transfer her assets into our trusted management group.”
Several attendees turned their heads to look at me with pity.
Christopher extended his hand toward me with a patronizing smile. “Gwen, darling, come up on stage. You do not have to say a single word, because I am more than happy to speak on your behalf.”
I walked up the carpeted stairs, stepped directly past his outstretched hand, and took the wireless microphone right out of his grip.
“Thank you, Christopher,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the high ceiling ballroom. “Actually, I would like to say a few words myself tonight.”
Christopher’s smile instantly tightened, and he whispered under his breath, “Gwen, stop this right now, this is not the appropriate time.”
“This is the absolute perfect time,” I replied loudly.
On my signal, the massive projection screen behind the stage cut to black. A second later, the clear video footage from our neighbor’s security camera filled the screen, showing Christopher creeping toward my house at 2:15 in the morning dressed in black tactical gear, pulling on thick rubber gloves, and clutching a concealed weapon.
The bustling room instantly fell into a dead, shocked silence.
“What on earth is the meaning of this fake video?” Christopher demanded, his face turning pale under the bright stage lights.
The display immediately changed to show high resolution scans of the three hidden life insurance policies bearing my forged name, highlighting the twenty four million dollar payout, followed directly by Christopher’s internet search history regarding forced overdoses and staged accidental deaths. Shocked gasps erupted throughout the ballroom.
Christopher lunged forward to grab the microphone out of my hand, but Dean stepped up onto the stage and planted his massive frame directly between us. “Do not take another step toward my client,” Dean warned coldly.
Valerie backed away toward the edge of the stage, her hands trembling violently. “This is absolute insanity! She is mentally unstable! Christopher, tell these people that your wife is sick!”
“Let us talk about my supposed illness then,” I said calmly into the microphone.
The room’s audio speakers suddenly blared a crystal clear recording from our anniversary dinner, catching Christopher’s smooth, manipulative voice as he tried to convince me that I was losing my mind and hearing non existent voices in our home. Immediately following the audio, a official certified lab report popped up on the big screen, showing the lethal concentration of prescription sedatives found in my wine glass.
“That laboratory report proves absolutely nothing!” Christopher shouted, sweat dripping down his forehead.
“I am nowhere near finished, Christopher,” I said firmly.
The screen shifted again, displaying thousands of internal company emails, Chloe’s financial audit, six million dollars in missing investor funds, and direct wire transfers to Valerie’s personal shell accounts. Angry shouts echoed from the back of the room as several major venture capitalists stood up from their tables.
“Christopher, you swore to us yesterday that our investment capital was fully secured in bonded accounts!” one investor yelled furiously.
“You presented completely falsified financial balance sheets to the board!” another creditor roared, slamming his fist onto his table.
Valerie tried to slip out through a side service exit, but several news photographers immediately blocked her path, flashing their cameras directly in her panicked face.
Then, the final audio clip played over the speakers, capturing Christopher carefully forging my signature while Valerie declared on tape, “Once Gwen is out of the picture, her entire design firm and all her real estate assets will belong to us.”
Beatrice leaped up from her chair near the front row, shaking with rage. “That audio is a complete fabrication! My son might have business flaws, but he is certainly not a cold blooded murderer!”
I looked down at my mother in law with deep pity. “Beatrice, you deserve to see the complete truth about your loving son.”
The screen displayed the official court registry document showing the four million dollar mortgage guarantee placed against Beatrice’s home. Beatrice frowned in confusion, clutching her pearl necklace. “Why is my property deed showing up on that screen?”
Next, the screen displayed the bank routing paths showing the four million dollar loan arriving in Christopher’s account, followed by its immediate transfer to Valerie the very next morning to purchase her luxury penthouse in Atlanta.
Beatrice stood completely motionless as her face drained of all color. She turned her head slowly toward her son. “Christopher… you told me that money was used to save your firm from bankruptcy.”
“Mother, please be quiet, I will explain everything to you later!” Christopher snapped frantically.
“Is my family home paying for your mistress’s luxury penthouse suite?” Beatrice shrieked, her voice cracking with betrayal.
Valerie threw her hands up in the air and screamed back, “I never forced you to sign those loan documents, old woman! Ask your precious son about the six million dollars he lost in illegal offshore trades! He was the one who said his wife was standing in the way of our future!”
The entire ballroom went completely silent as the horrifying admission hung in the air.
Christopher glared at Valerie with pure hatred in his eyes. “Shut your mouth right now!”
