One late-night call from my son made me hide. Then my husband entered the room with a secret plan. I finally understood the warning.

PART 2

Toby had managed to stumble across those hidden life insurance policies because Christopher had asked him to clean up old digital folders from our family storage drive earlier that week. My fourteen year old son was currently attending a prestigious prep school in Indianapolis, and he possessed a level of tech literacy that his father completely underestimated.

I immediately called my son back and begged him to stay quiet. “Toby, listen to me very carefully,” I whispered into the phone. “Do not confront your father under any circumstances, just keep downloading copies of every single file you find.”

“I have already backed everything up on a private drive, Mom,” Toby replied, his voice shaking with worry. “Please be careful around him.”

Next, I dialed Dean, a trusted security specialist who had served as my father’s head of building security for over two decades before coming to work for my interior design firm. Dean immediately reviewed the independent security feed from a hidden wildlife camera mounted on our neighbor’s garage, which confirmed my worst fears. The footage clearly showed Christopher parking his car two blocks away, pulling a dark hood over his face, putting on rubber gloves, and sneaking through our backyard to bypass the gated community’s front guardhouse.

“This is clear evidence of premeditated attempted murder, Gwen,” Dean said firmly as we reviewed the video in my private office. “We need to take this straight to the police department right now.”

“Not yet, Dean,” I said, shaking my head as a cold rage replaced my fear. “I need to know why he is doing this, and I need to uncover every single person involved.”

The answer to my question arrived sooner than I expected. Later that afternoon, I drove over to Christopher’s corporate headquarters in downtown Minneapolis under the pretense of dropping off a warm lunch box for him. As I walked down the quiet executive hallway, I overheard his chief financial officer speaking loudly behind a cracked office door.

“You have to replace the six million dollars you pulled from the hedge accounts before the end of the month, Christopher,” the executive warned angrily. “If the primary board of investors discovers this massive capital shortfall, our upcoming funding round is completely dead and they will freeze every asset we own.”

Christopher responded with a chilling, calm tone that sent shivers down my spine. “Do not panic, because by next week, a very large amount of capital will be coming in to cover every single account.”

My life and my father’s legacy were being auctioned off just to cover his illegal financial debts.

Before I could walk away, I heard a woman’s soft voice speak up from inside the room. It belonged to Valerie Vance, the ambitious owner of a marketing agency that handled public relations for Christopher’s firm. I stepped closer to the wall and peered through the narrow gap in the door frame to see Valerie standing directly behind my husband, gently rubbing his shoulders.

“When are you finally going to put an end to this double life?” Valerie murmured, wrapping her arms around his chest. “You promised me that beautiful brick estate in Cleveland would belong to us soon, and you know the baby cannot be raised in a cramped apartment.”

“We are almost at the finish line, my sweet Valerie,” Christopher replied, placing his hand tenderly over her visible baby bump. “Gwen is already starting to act paranoid, so if we can just get a corrupt physician to document that she is suffering from severe clinical depression and hallucinatory episodes, the rest of the plan will be effortless.”

I felt the room spin around me as the horrible reality set in. Christopher was not just planning to murder me; he was actively engineering a tragic mental health narrative to explain away my sudden death before he even carried out the act.

I took a deep breath, knocked firmly on the wooden door frame, and walked into the office with a wide, fake smile on my face. “Hi honey, I brought you some fresh lunch from that bistro you love.”

For thirty agonizing minutes, I played the role of the dutiful, naive wife, nodding politely as Christopher gently suggested that I seemed overly stressed lately and offered to book an appointment with a top psychiatrist he knew in Cincinnati.

Later that evening, my mother in law, Beatrice, showed up at my home with a covered dish of chicken soup and a manipulative lecture disguised as maternal care. “Gwen, dear, Christopher is carrying so much stress with his firm right now,” Beatrice said, setting the dish on the kitchen table. “Your house is worth a fortune, so you really ought to sign the deed over to him or take out a heavy mortgage to help his business, because after all, what belongs to you belongs to your husband.”

That was the exact moment I realized the insatiable greed ran deep within his entire family.

Late that night, I searched my father’s old private study in the basement and found fresh scratch marks around the metal lockbox where he used to store his original business licenses and property deeds. Two days later, a private investigator hired by my corporate attorney confirmed the rest of the dark truth: Christopher was drowning in millions of dollars of personal gambling debt, had made several suspicious bank transfers to offshore accounts, and had recently tried to bribe a local doctor to fabricate medical records regarding my mental stability.

The final piece of the puzzle fell into place when Dean obtained an audio recording secretly made by an honest junior executive at Christopher’s firm. In the recording, Christopher could be heard carefully tracing my signature onto a legal transfer contract while Valerie held a folder bearing the logo of my interior design firm.

“With this forged signature, we will transfer all of Gwen’s architectural licenses and commercial contracts over to our new shell company,” Christopher said on the recording. “Once she is out of the picture, no one will be around to contest the ownership.”

I shut off the audio recording and looked Dean straight in the eyes. “We are done hiding in the shadows, Dean.”

“What is our next move, Gwen?” Dean asked, his face setting into a serious expression.

“Christopher and Valerie are hosting a massive investor gala at a luxury hotel in Detroit next Friday,” I said, a cold smile forming on my lips. “They think they are going to celebrate their new fortune that night, but they are going to lose absolutely everything instead.”
