PART 2
We arrived late that night at the townhouse I had purchased long before marrying Chad. My key refused to turn in the lock because the cylinders had been completely replaced. I rang the bell repeatedly until my mother, Lorraine, opened the door wearing an expensive new coat and diamond earrings I had never seen before.
“Where is Toby?” I demanded immediately.
“He is fast asleep inside,” Lorraine replied coolly.
I attempted to push past her, but she stepped firmly into the entryway to block my path. “This home no longer belongs to you, Genevieve.”
My knees felt weak as I said, “Mom, Chad forged my signature to steal this place.”
Lorraine did not even bother to deny it. “You never knew how to appreciate what you had, always obsessed with your strict rules, financial calculations, and perfectionism. Chad actually thinks about the future.”
“How could you do this to your own daughter?” I asked, my voice cracking.
She answered with a horrifying calm. “I gave a formal statement to Chad’s legal team confirming you were involved in off-the-books operations. I validated the stories about cash payments and fake vendors, and in return, Chad promised me this townhouse and a generous monthly allowance.”
My own mother had actively helped construct the trap that was supposed to send me to prison for a decade.
However, they had made a critical mistake in their rush. The fraudulent power of attorney used to sell the townhouse bore a digital notarization timestamped at 11:43 a.m. the previous day. At that exact minute, I was sitting inside a federal courtroom without access to a phone or computer, while my identification documents were locked inside court custody.
Christopher’s legal team quickly tracked down the notary public involved. When the district attorney confronted him with the official court log, the notary broke down and confessed that Chad had threatened and bribed him into validating irregular paperwork.
Then an even more sinister layer of the plot came to light. Chad had formally filed for sole custody of Toby, citing my criminal conviction and my newly revealed connection to Christopher as proof that I was an unfit parent. While reviewing his filing documents, our lawyers discovered Chad’s complete medical history, which showed he suffered from absolute male infertility years before our wedding.
I stared at the medical report in total shock. Toby was six years old, and I had never been unfaithful to my husband a single time in my life.
Our team then subpoenaed records from the fertility clinic where we had undergone treatments years ago. I clearly remembered Chad telling me at the time that the doctors were using his own frozen genetic material. That was a complete lie, as the clinic had used an anonymous donor, and the altered consent form bore the signature of a second witness I recognized instantly: Lorraine Miller.
Chad had known from day one that Toby was not his biological son, yet he played the role of a loving father for six years while secretly preparing legal weapons to use the child against me if our marriage ever collapsed.
Christopher closed the file folder with a heavy thud and said, “Your mother did not start selling you out this week, Genevieve.”
The following afternoon, Chad attended a high-profile real estate investor summit in Scottsdale to secure capital for his new venture. I walked into the main hall accompanied by my father’s legal team.
When Chad saw me standing near the stage, his face drained of all color. “What on earth are you doing here?” he stammered. “You were handcuffed yesterday.”
“I am just here to correct a few accounting errors,” I replied loudly.
In front of bank executives and wealthy investors, I clearly explained that the prime commercial property Chad was offering as collateral was currently under criminal investigation for deed forgery. An executive immediately stepped away from Chad, rescinding his offer on the spot.
Chad cornered me in a private side hallway, his eyes wide with fury. “You are going to ruin everything I built!”
“You already ruined everything yourself,” I shot back.
Chad pulled out his smartphone and sneered, saying, “I still have something that will utterly destroy your father.”
He played an old audio file where Christopher’s voice rang out clearly, saying, “Make him disappear. I do not want to see him anywhere near this city tomorrow.”
The man Christopher was referring to was a former partner named Wayne Montgomery, who had died days later in a suspicious violent car crash.
Chad smiled wickedly and said, “Your mother kept that secret recording hidden for over twenty years. If you do not execute a full release of all inheritance claims from Christopher, this recording goes to the prosecutor and the news networks tonight.”
I returned to my father’s estate with trembling hands, but late that night, an unexpected visitor arrived at our gates. It was Brenda, my husband’s young mistress.
She walked into the study and said, “Chad has no idea who I actually am.”
She placed an old photograph on the desk showing a younger version of herself standing beside Wayne Montgomery. “Wayne was my older brother,” she revealed quietly.
I realized then that Brenda had not stumbled into our lives by accident either, and as she began to speak, I understood that none of us had seen the complete picture.
