My husband humiliated me in front of nearly 300 guests. His family laughed while I stayed calm. Then I made one phone call.

PART 3

Ten years earlier, Brendan had no chauffeur, no Italian suits, and no corner office in downtown. He was just a struggling sales executive at a small building materials company. He lived with Claire in a modest apartment and spoke with shame about all the doors that had been closed to him because he lacked high-society connections.

That was exactly how I met him back then.

I fell in love precisely because he seemed different from the ambitious men who had spent their entire lives revolving around my family’s wealth.

My grandfather, the original founder of Pinnacle Enterprises, had left me in full charge of the group when he passed away. His last piece of advice to me was simple: never confuse those who admire your wealth with those who actually love you. That was why I kept my identity out of the public eye for a full decade. The board was the public face, and I authorized all strategic decisions from a secure private office.

When I married Brendan, I hid my vast personal assets from him entirely. I truly wanted to know if he could build a real life with me without depending on my powerful last name.

At first, he was a caring and hardworking husband.

Then I decided to secretly help his stalled career forward.

I instructed Human Resources to consider him for an executive vacancy at Pinnacle Enterprises. Then, without his knowledge, I corrected strategic mistakes that were about to fail and sent anonymous recommendations from the chair’s office. His corporate career began to take off like a rocket.

Brendan foolishly believed that everything was purely a product of his raw talent.

I allowed him to believe it because I loved seeing him confident.

Five years before the banquet, I pushed the board for his official appointment as CEO. The house in La Jolla, a luxury SUV, an executive sedan, and a sports car were all part of the corporate benefit package. Claire started organizing lavish lunches to boast that her son had conquered the business world entirely from scratch.

For them, I continued to be just the woman who did the grocery shopping, organized the house, and supposedly lived off Brendan’s money.

Power didn’t change Brendan over time; it merely revealed the awful person he already was deep down.

He started arriving home late every night, and then he stopped coming home altogether. He constantly criticized my clothes, my quiet friends, and even the natural way I spoke.

“A modern CEO needs a stunning wife who reflects his high social level,” he told me bluntly one night.

Claire was even worse to deal with on a daily basis.

Three months before the anniversary party, she threw a hot bowl of soup I had prepared directly onto the floor and yelled at me.

“Ten years together and you haven’t even been able to give him an heir! Do my son a massive favor and get a divorce, because Sabrina actually belongs in his world,” Claire screamed at me back then.

That exact same week, I received the confidential internal report that changed everything.

An internal audit detected 18.4 million dollars sent to three fake advertising agencies with no real staff, no verifiable campaigns, and with contracts approved directly by Brendan.

I requested a discreet private investigation into the matter immediately.

The result of that investigation was utterly devastating to me.

Part of the money ended up buying a penthouse registered in Sabrina’s name. Another part paid for a luxury car, frequent trips to Europe, expensive handbags, and the exact diamond necklace she wore to the anniversary banquet.

Shocking messages between Brendan and Sabrina were also uncovered in the investigation.

In one of the text messages, Brendan wrote clearly: “After the anniversary party, I’m going to kick Sydney out of the house. My mom is already pressuring her every day, so as soon as I sign the divorce papers, you’re taking her place.”

I didn’t cry when I read those words on the screen.

I didn’t confront him at home either.

For three long months, I had all the evidence reviewed by external lawyers, criminal auditors, and compliance specialists. The board unanimously approved a special clause to suspend him immediately if he tried to move any more corporate money. On the night of the banquet, Andy and his legal team were already waiting nearby for my explicit call.

I still had one last doubt in my heart: I wanted to see if Brendan, in front of everyone, would be able to stop the public humiliation.

The three slaps across my face answered that question permanently.

Back in the living room, Andy began to display the physical evidence to the crowd.

“We have falsified contracts, illegal bank transfers, incriminating emails, forged authorizations, and hidden bank statements. The company will file official criminal complaints and seek full financial compensation for all damages,” Andy announced to the room.

Brendan looked frantically at Sabrina, grabbing her arm.

“Tell them it was for your marketing campaigns! Explain it to them right now!” he begged her.

Sabrina took another step away, shaking her head vigorously.

“I never signed any corporate documents,” she said coldly.

“But you knew about all of it!” Brendan yelled at her.

“I merely received personal gifts from you, so your legal problems with the company are entirely your own,” Sabrina replied without an ounce of sympathy.

The woman who had just poured wine on me was already frantically looking for a way out of the mess.

Claire approached her in desperation, grabbing her wrist.

“Sabrina, please tell these gentlemen that it’s all a huge mistake!” Claire pleaded.

“Don’t touch me, old woman,” Sabrina snapped, shoving her hand away harshly.

That cruel phrase was the very first dose of harsh reality for my mother-in-law.

That exact same night, legal personnel accompanied Brendan to the La Jolla house to conduct a formal inventory and allow him to remove only his personal belongings. There were no dramatic shouts from security guards or scenes straight out of an action movie. There were only licensed legal notaries, recording cameras, and binding documents.

Claire, however, caused a massive scene at the front entrance gate.

“This luxury house belongs to my successful son!” she screamed at the team.

Andy showed her the official property deed directly from his binder.

“It never belonged to him,” Andy told her plainly.

The three company vehicles parked in the garage were immobilized on the spot to be returned to the corporate fleet.

Brendan desperately asked to speak with me alone in the study room.

The summer rain was beating heavily against the glass windows outside.

“Sydney, please, we can fix this together. I just made a mistake,” he pleaded, grabbing his hair.

“You didn’t make a mistake just once, Brendan. You built your entire life on things that were never yours,” I replied steadily.

“Sabrina means absolutely nothing to me, I swear!” he cried out.

“Two hours ago, you hit me three times in front of hundreds of people because of her,” I reminded him firmly.

He slowly lowered his gaze to the floor, unable to meet my eyes.

“I honestly didn’t know who you really were,” he murmured softly.

That single sentence hurt me deeper than any of his slaps ever could.

“Exactly, Brendan. You genuinely thought that a woman without money deserved less basic respect, and that is the real problem here,” I said.

There was no response from him.

As he was forced to leave the house with just a suitcase, he desperately called Sabrina on his cell phone.

She was currently living in the luxury penthouse bought with the embezzled company money. Brendan was completely convinced that at least he would have a comfortable place to sleep that night.

Sabrina greeted him at the building door, but firmly blocked him from stepping inside.

“This property is legally in my name, and so is the car,” she stated flatly.

“I paid for every single thing in there with my money!” Brendan yelled in disbelief.

“Then you can explain all of that to the financial fraud lawyers,” she said coldly.

Claire, who just hours before had praised her as the perfect daughter-in-law, began to scream filthy insults at her in the lobby.

Sabrina simply closed the door in their faces and locked it tight.

Two days later, the penthouse and the vehicle became the subject of an intense legal dispute due to their direct connection to the embezzled corporate funds. Sabrina was forced to hire expensive defense lawyers and completely vanished from Brendan’s life as quickly as she had entered it.

A week later, Brendan showed up uninvited at the main Pinnacle Enterprises headquarters.

He was no longer wearing a designer suit or looking pristine. He had dark circles under his hollow eyes, an unkempt beard, and a deep desperation that I didn’t recognize at all.

Building security wouldn’t let him go up to the executive floors, but I agreed to meet him briefly in a private meeting room on the ground floor.

“Please withdraw the criminal complaint, Sydney! I’ll sign the divorce papers today and give up everything quietly, just don’t completely ruin my life,” he pleaded on his knees.

I placed a clear copy of the criminal audit file right in front of him.

“I didn’t invent these illegal transfers, Brendan. You personally authorized every single one,” I told him.

“I only did it because I fully thought I could replace the money later!” he shouted back.

“That still doesn’t make company money yours to take,” I reminded him.
