Part 3: The Anniversary Dinner
Our second wedding anniversary was fast approaching, and I decided to change my original plans completely. Originally, I had planned a small, quiet celebration for just the three of us at home with a nice dinner and a cake. Instead, I altered the plan entirely and invited both of our families to join us for a large dinner. Liam had no idea why I had invited everyone, assuming it was just a nice family celebration for our anniversary. I let him believe that false narrative without correcting him.
On the afternoon of the dinner, while we were getting ready in the bedroom, I gave him one final opportunity to tell me the truth.
“Is there anything happening at work that I need to know about?” I asked, looking him directly in the eyes.
Liam shook his head without hesitation. “No, nothing at all. Work is just busy.”
“What about us?” I pressed softly. “Is everything okay with our marriage?”
He stepped closer and kissed my forehead softly. “Everything is completely fine, sweetheart.”
That final lie settled something deep inside my heart. I stopped wondering whether I had somehow misunderstood that phone call, because I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I hadn’t.
That evening, our families gathered around the long dining room table. My parents, his parents, and his sister were all present and smiling. The dinner was simple and familiar, featuring roast chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and pumpkin pie. It looked like a picture-perfect American family gathering in every way. Everyone laughed, shared stories, and enjoyed the food while Liam sat beside me, completely unaware of what was coming.
After dinner was finished and the plates were cleared, I stood up from my chair and picked up my glass of water.
“I want to make a special toast,” I announced loudly enough for everyone to hear.
Liam stiffened slightly beside me, looking a bit surprised by my sudden announcement. I smiled warmly at the table, though my hand felt freezing cold against the glass. Both families turned their attention to me, eagerly waiting to hear my words.
“Six days ago, my dear husband, Liam, forgot to hang up his phone,” I began calmly.
The entire dining room instantly fell dead silent as everyone looked at me in confusion. Liam’s face changed immediately, turning pale in a matter of seconds.
“I called him because I wanted to know if he would be home for dinner,” I continued, keeping my voice firm and steady. “He was angry that I was checking up on him during his workday.”
Liam stared at me with wide, panicked eyes, his jaw dropping slightly.
“But the call didn’t end when he thought it did,” I said, looking around the table at our families. “I heard a woman laughing in the background.”
Nobody in the room moved an inch, completely frozen by my words.
“I heard my husband complain to her that I sent too many pictures of our baby,” I said, letting the words sink in. “I heard him say he just wanted me to leave him alone, and then I heard him say that he hated me.”
Liam looked down at his hands, entirely incapable of meeting my gaze.
“I heard him promise her that he would divorce me and marry her instead,” I added, wrapping up the story.
A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the entire dining room before Liam finally found his voice.
“It wasn’t like that at all,” Liam stammered out, his voice shaking visibly.
I looked at him calmly. “Then what was it, Liam?”
He struggled to find an answer, glancing nervously at his parents. “It was just venting! I was stressed out!”
I reached down into the folder sitting on the chair beside me. “Venting?” I asked, pulling out the first document.
I placed our prenuptial agreement directly on the table in front of him. Then I placed neat copies of all our financial records beside it for everyone to see.
“I have already spoken with a family-law attorney,” I revealed calmly. “I’ve reviewed our mortgage, our insurance policies, our investment accounts, and our estate documents. I’ve already asked all the necessary legal questions about custody and separation.”
His mother gasped loudly in complete shock, covering her mouth with both hands, while my parents remained entirely silent, processing the revelation.
Liam shook his head in absolute disbelief. “You planned all of this behind my back?”
“No,” I replied firmly. “You planned the affair. I simply planned not to be blindsided by it.”
