After an emergency involving my daughter, I went looking for answers at her boyfriend’s gym. The coach took one look at my gray beard and underestimated me.

I pulled my frightened little girl close, forcing myself to swallow the fury rising inside me. “I’ll take care of it.”

Then one phone call changed everything. It was Eleanor, calling directly from the hospital.

“She’s in the ER. She has several broken ribs and a severe concussion. She keeps telling the doctors she fell down the stairs.”

I didn’t head to the hospital. I went straight to his gym.

The place smelled like stale sweat, cold steel, and the kind of arrogance that comes from believing nobody can touch you. Dustin was inside the cage, laughing with his coach and several of his toughest sparring partners.

The instant he noticed me standing beside the ropes, a smug grin spread across his face. “Well, look who finally showed up. The old man actually made it here. Daddy came to check on me?”

His coach was enormous, with tattoos running all the way up his neck. He looked me over from head to toe, taking in my gray beard, faded flannel, and completely ordinary middle-aged appearance before bursting into laughter. “So what’s the plan, Grandpa? You gonna ground him for a week?”

I kept my voice steady. Calm. Controlled. “You put your hands on my daughter.”
