A 6-year-old followed hospital signs while pushing her newborn brothers toward help. When she finally reached the doors, she could finally let the grown-ups take over.

“We’ll take care of them.”

“No!”

The girl grabbed one nurse’s sleeve.

“Promise?”

The nurse knelt.

“I promise.”

Only then did the child release her.

Doctors rushed both newborns into treatment.

Angela remained with the girl.

“What is your name?”

“Lucy.”

“Lucy what?”

“Lucy Harper.”

“How old are you?”

She held up six fingers.

Angela swallowed.

“Where are your parents?”

Lucy looked toward the hallway where the babies had disappeared.

Then she said the sentence nobody in that emergency department would ever forget.

“My mommy has been sleeping for three days.”

Angela stared at her.

“Sleeping?”

Lucy nodded.

“I can’t wake her up.”

Every expression in the room changed.

“Where is your mother?”

“At home.”

“Where’s home?”

Lucy gave an address nobody immediately recognized.

Angela entered it into the computer.

Nothing appeared.

“Is there another name? A road?”

Lucy thought.

“We live past Mr. Harris’s red barn.”

That was all she knew.

Angela contacted emergency services.

Police were notified.

So were paramedics.

A nurse brought Lucy water.

She drank almost the entire cup without stopping.

“When did you eat last?”

Lucy shrugged.

“Yesterday.”

“What did you eat?”

“Crackers.”

“Anything today?”

She shook her head.

Angela’s chest tightened.

Someone brought a sandwich.

Lucy immediately broke it in half.

“This is for Noah.”

“Who’s Noah?”

“My brother.”

“One of the babies?”

Lucy nodded.

“And the other?”

“Eli.”

Angela gently pushed the sandwich back toward her.
