In the maternity ward, my husband demanded a divorce and tried to take my 40% stake in the company. What he didn’t know was that I still had access to the one thing he couldn’t control.

Chapter 3: The Hush Money

The diner smelled of stale grease and burnt coffee. It was a far cry from the Michelin-starred restaurants Daniel frequented. I sat in the cracked vinyl booth, a manila folder resting on the sticky Formica table. Lily was strapped to my chest, fast asleep, blissfully unaware that her mother was about to play executioner.

The bell above the door jingled, and Marcus Hale walked in. He looked exactly like a man who survived on irregular payouts: wearing a designer jacket over a faded, stained t-shirt, eyes darting nervously around the room.

He slid into the booth across from me. “You said you were a lawyer for VNR Holdings. What’s the problem? The payments are clearing.”

“I’m not a lawyer,” I said, keeping my voice low and even. “I’m Clara Whitmore. Daniel Whitmore’s wife. Or, soon to be ex-wife.”

Marcus froze. The color drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, pallid gray. He started to slide out of the booth. “I don’t know anything. I don’t want any trouble—”

“Sit down,” I commanded. It wasn’t a request. The authority in my voice cracked like a whip, and his spine snapped against the back of the booth.

I opened the manila folder and slid a single sheet of paper toward him. It was a bank statement highlighting the monthly $6,500 transfers.

“Extortion is a federal crime, Marcus. Especially when the money you’re receiving is being embezzled from a corporate entity. That’s wire fraud, money laundering, and blackmail. You’re looking at ten to fifteen years in federal prison.”

He swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “She gave me that money! I didn’t ask where it came from.”

“But you asked for it,” I countered, leaning forward. “Why? Why is Vanessa paying you? She’s marrying a millionaire in two weeks. Why keep the deadbeat ex around on a payroll?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he stammered, looking at the door.

“Let me tell you a story, Marcus. Daniel wants a son. He’s obsessed with the idea of a Whitmore heir. Suddenly, his young, beautiful mistress turns up pregnant with a boy. Daniel is so thrilled he buys her a penthouse and tries to have his current wife institutionalized to steal her company shares. But Vanessa is smart. She knows Daniel will want proof before he rewrites his will and signs over his life.”

I tapped the paper. “So she got a prenatal paternity test. She had to, to secure the bag. But Daniel isn’t the father, is he, Marcus?”

Silence hung heavy over the table. The only sound was the hum of the neon sign in the window.

“She told you to lay low,” I continued, twisting the knife. “She promised you a cut of the empire once she married him and locked down the inheritance. She’s paying you from her stolen corporate funds to keep your mouth shut until the ring is on her finger.”
