In the maternity ward, my husband demanded a divorce and tried to take my 40% stake in the company. What he didn’t know was that I still had access to the one thing he couldn’t control.

Chapter 5: House of Cards

The chaos erupted like a shattered dam. Guests were whispering frantically, phones were pulled out, recording the magnificent collapse of the Whitmore facade.

Margaret, refusing to accept the death of her social standing, lunged forward. She pointed a manicured finger an inch from my face.

“This is a lie! It’s a fabrication by a jealous, hysterical woman! Your father gave Daniel everything because he knew you were too weak to handle it!”

As she yelled, the massive, pear-shaped diamond necklace resting on her collarbone caught the light of the chandeliers, sparkling with arrogant brilliance.

I looked at the necklace, then back at Margaret. I smiled. It wasn’t a nice smile.

“That’s a beautiful piece, Margaret. Graff, isn’t it? Purchased exactly three weeks ago for $250,000.”

She puffed out her chest. “A gift from my son. A token of appreciation for everything I’ve done.”

“A token,” I repeated loudly. I pulled a folded invoice from my clutch purse. “Elena, would you read the routing number from the account used to purchase that necklace?”

Elena stepped forward, adjusting her glasses. “Routing number ends in 4409. The Whitmore Development Employee Pension and Retirement Fund.”

The board members gasped. A murmur of pure outrage swept through the crowd. Stealing corporate funds was one thing; robbing the retirement accounts of hundreds of employees was a crime that destroyed dynasties.

“You bought your mother’s jewelry with the retirement money of the men pouring concrete for your buildings,” I said, my voice laced with disgust.

I stepped right up to Margaret. “Take it off.”

Margaret balked, her hand flying to her throat to protect the diamonds. “You can’t—”

“Take it off, Margaret,” I said, my tone lethal. “Or I will have Mr. Sterling lock the doors and we can wait for the FBI to arrive to confiscate the stolen property directly from your neck. Your choice. Public humiliation or federal handcuffs.”
