“Get rid of anything with my name on it! Everything!” she ordered, her voice shrill, captured perfectly by the camera’s hidden microphone.
Ryan hesitated, his hands trembling as he held the plastic bag. “Mom, wait. Are we sure about this? Destroying documents? Courtney won’t actually go through with this. She’s just trying to scare us. It’s a bluff.”
Linda stopped, throwing her head back and barking out a harsh, mocking laugh.
“A bluff? Ryan, look at her. She’s weak. She’s a coward. She always comes back. She’ll crawl back to you by the weekend apologizing for the mess. Now shut up and help me pack this before the lawyers get involved!”
My finger hovered over the trackpad. With a single click, I downloaded the five-minute clip. With another, I forwarded it directly to Detective Miller’s encrypted email with a subject line that read: Active Evidence Destruction at Mercer Residence.
Two hours later, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the dusk sky.
Officers intercepted Linda’s silver SUV three blocks from our apartment building. She had tried to talk her way out of it, flashing her signature charm, but a warrant is immune to charm.
The heavy black trash bags were still sitting conspicuously in the back seat.
Inside those bags, the police found original hard-copy invoices, forged bank statements, and, tucked away in a side pocket of a leather folio, a small, unassuming silver flash drive.
A flash drive containing master spreadsheets I had never even seen.
When my attorney got a copy of the police inventory report the next morning, that little silver drive changed the entire landscape of the war.
The fraud I had uncovered was just the tip of the iceberg. The $186,400 I had documented was only from the current fiscal year. The spreadsheets on Linda’s drive detailed a systematic, multi-year bleed.
The actual amount stolen from the company? It was closer to $740,000.
But as I combed through the recovered files, my blood ran ice cold. Buried deep inside the digital access logs was something infinitely more sinister than theft.
Linda’s personal IP address showed that she had breached my local network. She had discovered that I was actively reviewing the Apex Materials accounts just forty-eight hours before she showed up at my apartment while Ryan was away.
The attack in my kitchen hadn’t been a sudden, emotional outburst over a changed savings account password.
It was a premeditated, calculated strike. She hadn’t lost her temper; she had systematically orchestrated an assault to terrorize me, to break my spirit, and to scare me into absolute, paralyzed silence before I could blow the whistle.
Unfortunately for Linda Mercer, she had targeted a woman whose entire professional existence was dedicated to pulling at loose threads. She had targeted the one person trained to follow the money until it screamed.
Chapter 5: The Reckoning at the Table
Three weeks later, the air inside the conference room of Jenkins & Associates was thick enough to cut with a scalpel.
Ryan walked into the mediation wearing the exact same navy bespoke suit he had worn at our wedding. The irony was not lost on me. But the man inside the suit looked like a ghost of his former self. He had lost weight, dark circles bruising the skin under his eyes, his usual arrogant swagger replaced by a stiff, terrified posture.
