My attorney answered on the second ring.
“Margaret?”
“I’m ready,” I said.
There was a short silence.
Then she asked, “Ready for what?”
“To stop pretending nothing has changed.”
Her name was Elaine Porter, and she had been the first person I called after realizing the numbers on my lottery ticket matched.
Elaine knew exactly how much money I had.
She also knew Daniel didn’t know.
Neither did Renee.
Neither did my grandchildren.

And I intended to keep it that way.
“At least for now,” I added.
Elaine’s voice softened.
“Did something happen?”
I looked around the guest bedroom I had been calling mine for nearly two years.
