My family kept sharing a spare key behind my back, but when I learned why, I realized the key was only the beginning.

I looked through the peephole.

My mother stood on the porch with Caleb behind her.

She held a covered casserole dish in one hand and the old emergency key in the other.

“I brought food,” she called through the door. “Emma needs rest, not more stress.”

Emma stared at me.

“Don’t open it.”

I didn’t.

My mother knocked softly, the way she used to when she came over to water our plants while we traveled.

“Honey, I know you’re upset,” she said. “But isolating a pregnant woman from her support system is not healthy.”

Caleb added, “You’re making permanent decisions while you’re angry.”

Emma walked closer to the door.

Not too close.

“Tell them to leave.”

I did.

My mother tried the key again.

It turned nowhere.

The lock didn’t move.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then she said, “So this is what she wanted.”

Emma’s mouth tightened.

I started recording from inside the house.

My mother lowered her voice.

“When the baby comes, you’ll understand why family cannot be shut out because of one emotional evening.”

Emma whispered, “Keep recording.”

I kept recording.

Caleb finally touched my mother’s elbow and guided her toward the steps.

Before leaving, she placed the old key on the porch beside the casserole dish.
