My family kept sharing a spare key behind my back, but when I learned why, I realized the key was only the beginning.

I didn’t.

Instead, I asked what she wanted saved.

“All of it.”

I saved the thread.

I saved the photographs.

I saved Denise’s deleted-message notification.

I saved the voicemail my mother had left while Emma was showing me the conversation.

The voicemail began with my mother saying she knew I was frightened and ended with her asking me to remember that pregnancy could make “small misunderstandings feel enormous.”

She never mentioned the blood.

She never mentioned the bones.

She never mentioned Caleb taking Emma’s phone.

Emma listened once.

“Save that too.”

I did.

Before the nurse returned, Emma opened another message from Denise, sent earlier on the day of the dinner.

“Come tonight. We’ll get everybody settled and make her apologize properly.”

Emma had believed that meant my mother would apologize to her.

Nothing in the message said six relatives would be waiting.

Nothing mentioned my brother.

Nothing mentioned keys.

While Emma searched the rest of the thread, I went to the vending machine and bought a packet of pretzels I didn’t want because my hands needed something useless to do.

I came back with them unopened.

Emma had found one more message.

It had arrived sometime before dinner.

Denise had written, “Just stay until she finishes talking.”

Emma looked at me.

“I should have left then.”

“You tried to leave.”

She looked down.

That mattered.

A few minutes later, my mother called again.

I didn’t answer.

Caleb followed.

I didn’t answer.

Then Denise called.

Emma watched the screen vibrate against the hospital tray.

“Do you want me to take it?” I asked.

“No.”

She declined the call herself.

Almost immediately, Denise sent another message.

“I can explain what happened.”

Emma typed three words.

“Not to me.”

Then she blocked her.

Before midnight, I removed my mother and Caleb from the hospital contact list, gave the desk explicit instructions that nobody from my family was allowed into Emma’s room, and confirmed that the locksmith had replaced every exterior lock at our house.
