He Gave Me 30 Days to Leave—Until My Daughter Read My 11-Year-Old Lease.

“There is one more issue.”

“What?”

“He wants to know how you obtained a copy of the original building agreement.”

I smiled.

“I didn’t.”

“My daughter found it.”

There was silence.

Then the attorney laughed quietly.

“I see.”

He sounded almost relieved.

“Tell your daughter she saved your landlord from a much bigger problem.”

That afternoon, my daughter explained everything.

The landlord wasn’t simply bound by my lease.

The entire building had restrictions attached to its financing and ownership agreement.

If he violated them, he could face penalties.

Potentially much more expensive than the rent increase he’d hoped to collect.

The next day, the landlord knocked on my door.

For the first time in eleven years, he looked nervous.

“Can we talk?”

I invited him inside.

He sat at the kitchen table.

“I made a mistake.”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t realize the restriction applied to your unit.”

“You should have checked.”

He nodded.

“You’re right.”

I waited.

Then he said:

“I’d like to keep you as a tenant.”

I almost smiled.

“I’m sure you would.”

He looked embarrassed.

“I’ve had problems with vacancies in the building.”

“So you thought I’d be easy to replace?”

“No.”

“You gave me thirty days.”

“I know.”

“You knew I’d lived here eleven years.”

“I know.”

“You knew I had nowhere to go.”

He looked down.

“I made a business decision.”

“And I made a decision too.”

He looked up.

“I’ve decided I’m staying.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

“And I’m keeping my lease.”

“Yes.”

“And the rent increase is canceled.”

“Yes.”

I stood.

“Then we’re done.”

He left.

I closed the door.

Then my daughter hugged me.

“You can start unpacking.”
