And worst of all, it showed my father stepping between Megan and me and ordering me outside while Lily cried behind me.
Nobody could describe it as an accident anymore.
Megan started sobbing.
“I was angry. I never meant for her to get hurt.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You struck a five-year-old because you were angry.”
My father reached toward the tablet.
Daniel stopped him.
“Don’t touch it.”
Then he opened another file.
A printout of text messages.
Megan had messaged Mom that morning:
“Tonight she finally learns she isn’t one of us.”
My mother covered her mouth.
I felt sick.
This had been planned.
The birthday party hadn’t fallen apart by chance. Megan had intended to humiliate Lily before I ever stepped through the door.
Then came the part that made Daniel turn toward my father.
Another message.
Dad had replied:
“Keep it under control. We cannot have Sarah making a scene again.”
My knees felt weak.
They knew.
They expected something to happen.
Daniel closed the folder.
“The police have the footage. Lily’s doctor has documented her !njuries. And my attorney has already requested an emergency protective order.”
My father stared at him.
“You wouldn’t do that to your own family.”
Daniel replied, “You stopped acting like family when you laughed while my daughter was hurt.”
Megan rushed forward, crying.
“Please. Don’t ruin my life.”
I stepped between her and Lily’s memory.
“You made these choices yourself.”
Daniel took my hand.
Then he looked at me.
“There’s one more thing you need to know.”
He pulled out one final document.
I read the first line.
My parents had secretly been trying to claim that I was an “unfit mother” so they could pursue temporary custody of Lily.
The room became completely silent.
I looked down at the document again.
“Temporary guardianship petition.”
My name appeared on it.
So did Lily’s.
“When did you file this?”
My father stared at the floor.
“We hadn’t filed yet.”
“Yet?”
My voice cracked.
The petition described me as “emotionally unstable” and accused me of exposing Lily to unsafe relatives. It claimed my parents could provide a “more stable home.”
Then I noticed who had written most of the statements.
Megan.
She had twisted disagreements between my parents and me into supposed evidence that I was unstable. She cited my husband’s deployment as evidence that I was raising Lily without enough support.
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“They were building a case against you.”
My mother burst into tears.
“We thought Megan understood what she was doing.”
“You let her build a case for taking my daughter?”
“We thought you were going to leave her with Daniel when he deployed again.”
“I am her mother.”
“We know.”
“No. You forgot.”
The police arrived shortly afterward.
They reviewed the footage, documented Lily’s injuries, and collected statements from everyone who attended the party.
