Daniel continued repeating the same thing.

“It was an accident.”

Evelyn repeated it more loudly.

“She slipped. She has always been dramatic.”

At the hospital, fetal monitoring confirmed that the baby’s heartbeat remained stable, but the obstetrician ordered several hours of observation. Rachel lay beneath a thin blanket, staring toward the ceiling while Michael remained beside her.

He did not ask why she had stayed.

He asked, “How long has he been handling you like this?”

Michael waited.

She turned her face toward the window.

“He grabs things. Doors. My phone. Once he hit the wall beside me. He checks the mileage on my car. His mother tells him I’m hiding money. He says I make him seem weak whenever I disagree with him.”

“Has he ever taken money from you?”

Rachel paused again.

That hesitation was enough.

During the next hour, pieces of the marriage slowly began emerging. Daniel had persuaded Rachel to place thirty thousand dollars into a joint renovation account.

The renovation never happened. He had borrowed against a vehicle registered in both their names. He had repeatedly demanded access to the trust established by Rachel’s father, but the trust documents prevented Daniel from controlling the principal.
